Reality being whatever it is - we should be helping our brothers and sisters who went thru this nightmare better. Glad that there finally seems to be churches and other organizations getting in there to help alongside FEMA. From experience Bill the biggest problem for Government and NGO’s is getting there and finding a safe place for their people. Second is a big deal because after a biggie those places tend to become official & Unofficial shelters. How much harder do you reckon it is to find a safe place for government agencies (and more importantly, the folks on the ground doing the actual work) when there's a massive disinformation campaign involving everyone from Russian media bots to leading candidates seeking the highest reaches of elected office lying about those agencies' efforts? The flippant sharing of disinformation doesn't exactly do any favors for the regular people, and I'd remind everyone here that partaking in it does a real disservice to both the victims of these tragedies and to the folks trying their damnedest to help those victims. |

Based on my experience after Ike FEMA was putting its people about 75 miles north, lots of NGO’s they were sleeping in trucks. Even then we had disinformation, they had originally docked a Carnival Ship as temp housing, but nobody would board because there were rumors they were going to leave in the middle of the night and take them god knows where. Talking over the years to people who were in Katrina, all kinds of weird rumors that ran rampant. Now they just are louder, amplified by people in power repeating them. They might get more attention because the press can’t get to what makes great Television yet? |

It’s true that there is a massive disinformation campaign influencing right wing media, and that the intel agencies of foreign adversaries like Russia are all too keen to exploit this fragile moment in our nation’s history. Sad stuff when there are real life people hurting, and other real life people busting their asses to help. - George Carlin My son's have recently introduced me to the brilliant late great George Carlin. His Youtube videos of his comedy sets are some of the funniest videos I've ever seen - he was a very clever and super talented comedian. Genius - up there with Robin Williams imho. Watching the world news these days - we all need cheering up as much as possible. |

I don't know about any "disinformation" (hate that term), Russians, media bots or candidates, but the actual stories of from the very mouths of real people on the ground impeded by "the powers that be" who were on location trying to help their neighbors are popping out all over. There is no containing it. Our country needs reform, no doubt. Gov has gotten too big. Actual individual humans are doing a better job than huge agencies. I'm hoping and praying for those in NC that they can get back to some sort of normalized life asap. Godspeed NC, FL and all surrounding areas..... |

Misinformation/disinformation is indeed a huge problem…more so though is the lack of skepticism we all show when info comes from “our side” as to opposed to the “other side”. No one is immune to this.
Having lived on the front lines of the biggest health emergency of our time (Covid), I can say that the misinformation that was most harmful was the misinformation that came directly from the government.
We need to rely more on each other, as neighbors, family, friends, fellow humans etc and less on the government to fix our problems. It’s just the practical reality. I’m hoping and praying that the people on the ground get the resources they need to rebuilt their lives quickly.
