A few years back I posted a few of these..... Thought it might be time for another. At the link, you can download a zip file of a tune of mine you can mix. Happy All Alone zip file..... Included in that zip file are four examples of a static fader/pan only mix..using LUNA. 84 Bpm. Key of G# One is nothing added Next same but with ATR 102 tape emulation Next ATR 102 and NEVE SUMMING Next ATR 102 and API SUMMING This way you can hear the mix with the differing options on it... All the individual tracks are included... as well as a midi file for the drums (this way you can use your preferred virtual instrument). The file is only 605MB. It has drums, bass, vocal, acoustic guitar, ganjo, backing vocals The tracks are as tracked through my Apollo X8. I use LUNA. Drums are EZdrummer 3, singer songwriter EZX.... I included the EZD3 project file for those who have it. These are played in on my TD17 e kit... Bass is Fender squire jazz bass into Apollo Unison Preamp using the Neve 1073 preamp emulation Acoustic guitar is my Taylor 327 mic'd with Townsend Labs Sphere into Apollo Unison Preamp using the Neve 1073 preamp emulation Ganjo (6 string banjo) mic'd with Townsend Labs Sphere into Apollo Unison Preamp using the UA 610 preamp emulation. Vocal is me into U87i into Apollo using the Neve 1084 unison preamp Backing vocals are Neumann KM84 into Apollo preamp no unison..just vanilla Apollo preamp The sphere mic'd guitars are not using any of the software... its just as the mic sounds... recorded in fig 8 (That's why its stereo) it records the outputs of both capsules.. How I do the summing I create busses... Drums, bass, acoustic guitars, vocals, harms and Mix buss.....and route the appropriate tracks to those. Then those busses have the NEVE or API Summing Extensions on them...the TAPE is inserted on the Mix Bus, post fader like I am bouncing down to it. Please post your mixes up so I/we can hear them... Would love to hear some mixes using outboard, consoles, your favourite plug ins... etc Replace the parts if you want as well... as long as you don't use the tune for commercial reasons I have no problem what so ever.... If you don't want to post your stuff publicly...at least send me a link so I can hear them.... 8) cheers Wiz

Cool, I'm super busy right now but I'm gonna try to take a crack at this in Logic, it will be my first attempt to mix anything in that daw, i'm a fan so it will be fun for me even if i fail miserably 8)

When you get the files loaded into your DAW... just try an EQ on the mix bus with a little dip at 100hz and 200Hz....for me that cleans it up quite a bit...
I have all the faders at unity...and the harms panned all the way left and right...with the two acoustic guitars about just under half way left and right.
Trying different eq's on the mix bus...with the little cut at 100 and 200, its quite interesting how each EQ sounds....
I have been experimenting with EQ on the mix bus, prior to starting in on channels...
Let me know what you think
cheers

I can give you another perspective: you have luna with API and Neve summing – I can give you Acoustica Audio Gold 5 (Neve) and IK Muiltimedia Tape sound. will be interesting for me too to hear how these compare.

Hey this sounds like a blast, thanks! I got a question. Are we to produce a mix that's designed to go on to be mastered? Or are we producing mixes that are pretty much mastered to the final loudness wideness etc?
I'm kind of interested in learning more about the dark art of mastering, so I'm wondering if either I could take it to mix, and then a second file for a mastered version, or what would pass for a master version from this dude. Or perhaps I could take a feeble stab at mastering somebody else's mix.

Cool. Took a listen and I'll try a mix later. Honestly I didn't hear that much difference between the various bus mix options.

ok, here we go. i did put Acoustica Audio Gold 5 and IK Multimedia Tape 24 (Ampex, 250 tape, 15ips) on your tracks. here's how it sounds:
I like it. It sounds a bit clearer overall and a bit more solid bottom end. I actually own the IK tape plug ins.. but don't have any of their products installed since I rebuilt the computer...might have to put them back on and try.... Interesting and here i did a 20 minute mix of a few seconds with Gold5, IK tape, a bit of Sunset Sound Reverb (Chamber and Spring Reverb):I love the floaty backing vocals... and that Sunset Sound reverb sounds great.... on my system the guitars are buried a bit compared to the vocal bass and drums.... thanks for doing that.... I should have mentioned and will add it to my original post... how I do the summing I create busses... Drums, bass, acoustic guitars, vocals, harms and Mix buss.....and route the appropriate tracks to those. Then those busses have the NEVE or API Summing Extensions on them...the TAPE is inserted on the Mix Bus, post fader like I am bouncing down to it. cheers Wiz

theshea gave me a good idea.... sharing just a small portion of the track.. .so lets just do verse 1 and chorus 1 that should give us enough to listen to.... Here is a zip containing three examples.... www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/y6zstrpwnxdg1a5jya9pr/Api-vision-and-3-2-bus-comps.zip?rlkey=uzattmok4x19r23wd2vithe8p&st=1hrrqem7&dl=0
1. API Vision EQ ing the mix bus into ATR102 (this is just the original static mix , which I will never make changes to, or the tape) 2 Same as above but with SSL G Buss 3 Same as 1, but with Neve 2254 both compressors doing around 3dB GR In the zip is a photo of the settings on the API, SSL and Neve I also ran the API vision through Plug In Doctor so you can see the EQ curve Cheers Wiz

i did put gold 5 and a ik tape 24 on every track bot just on busses. the tape 24 with the 250 on 15ips. so the effect is quiet stronger than yours. than i put the gold5 comp (in fact a 2254 comp) on mixbus and drumbus. glues it together. i did not like the ez drums, to sparse and the snare and room sound i did not like. your voice sounds spectacular. overall i did some really tiny gold5 eq moves, very small and not on every track. except the bass i spend most of the 20 minutes on. the taylor guitar yeah is buried because i heared it just like a rhythmic/percussive element. but i did it in 20 minutes. you should try ik tape 80 (studer) on mix us. it does A LOT. not just tape sound, in fact to me it sounds more like a betterizer plugin than a tape emulation.

I did a mix... prob 90 mins.... Pretty close to finished... would like to do a little automation here and there...and I still have to put a solo in...which I have an idea on. Happy All Alone Mix 1 Here is what I am using in the mix (the faders in Luna are shortened here so I can fit everything in....8)... it doesn't always look like that....LOL..... ) API summing on the busses The 327 channel has the Sphere Putnam Mic model of a 251 and the Banjo channel is the Putnam C12A Sound City is the virtual room , and the Bricasti on a chamber is the reverb. The AMS RMX is only on the vocal...and the delay is on the vocal... I want to automate this a bit.. so the panning changes.... cheers Wiz Ps anyone getting something out of this? Should I continue.......?

I'll try to do something quickly before listening to your mixes. It will be an amateur mix that still has a lot to learn but I really want to play the game

still not happy wiz the drums. i would re record them with real drums. Do you mean, you will record them with real drums? That would be interesting to hear. As far as me, re recording with real drums...thats probably not going to happen... I sold off all my drum gear and associated audio mics and gear and I am content recording with the e kit ... different strokes and all.. thanks again for posting...its great to hear stuff... cheers Wiz

I mixed the track this afternoon and just finished it up. I found a lot of the color plugins you posted to sound annoying so I did it as ho hum as possible to prove it doesn't matter that much. One print has nothing on the mix bus. The other has an EQ into u-He Satin. All EQ is Oxford Type 3. TDR Arbiter as a de-esser because it's the best. All compression is Oxford Dynamics along with a gate on the main vocal. The background vocals are saturated by the Warmth because they didn't hit the Neve emulations. The Oxford has a nice sheen and makes the vocal float. Oxford Transmod on the cheesy pokey drum samples. Vintage Warmer on the bass to make it cut better. Oxford Reverb because almost anything worked so why not? The editing and not great fades demand a big reverb. A high shelf into Satin hit lightly for warmth, smooth saturation, head bump, and all important glue. Taken off, everything isn't as glued together but is cleaner. Oxford Limiter is just used for a dc filter, dither, and to prevent any intersample peaks which there were none because I didn't push the mix. we.tl/t-G2ec0cEd7T

Both mixes sound nice and soft and pillowy to me...I think I prefer the satin mix.....will listen again tomorrow with fresh ears... I did pick up on something a touch weird..... sounds like a gating issue on the voice? happens quite a lot during the mix.... if you listen to the word "you" in the line "you stand there smiling" it sticks out pretty prominently.... what's causing that? When you talk about Satin....are you talking about Fab Filter Satin? cheers and thanks again Wiz
