So I set up my heiserman last night on acoustic guitar, sounded fantastic everything was great. Left it set up just turned off the PSU, went to bed. Tonight I turn it back on to continue recording - no signal. Put a different mic through the chain, worked fine, put the heiserman through a different preamp - no signal. I'm thinking what the hell is going on, it was working fine last night! So I attempt to unplug my Heiserman from the mic cable/ psu cause I'm not sure what else to try and, I can't freaking take the mic cable off the microphone. Turns out I crossthreaded it when setting it up last night. So I grab a wrench, a little oil, and 20 minutes later finally get this mic cable off at the expense of ruining the cosmetics of the mic cable piece - whatever, I made my peace with that, the mic still looks perfect aside from a little crossthreading on the threads. Try to re-plug it in and put the cable on (it can no longer fully tighten) as much as I can without crossthreading it further, I was hoping it would still be usable but - no signal again! I smelled the connector on the mic and the cable and they both smell like something burned. Smells like something fried. All because I didn't realize the mic cable was not threading correctly when I set it up.
The threads on my microphone are bent at the bottom, and the threads on the mic cable may also be unusable now. And who knows what got messed up inside the mic itself.
I've only used my heiserman a handful of times, Argghhh

That stinks bro, sorry to hear, but be sure not to attempt to plug the mic in when the psu is on, in fact have a qualified replace the connector and don’t attempt to test yourself unless you really know what u r doing, u47’s have up to 400vdc pumping through them and that can easily kill you, the ground pin is not guaranteed to connect first which makes your hand the lead to ground! If I’m freaking you out….? Good! Be extremely careful!

That fucking sucks
Honestly though, get workhorse shit before you get cool shit. But I’ve had friends who’ve had similar shit happen. Always turn everything off, unplug the mics, and keep em in at least anti static bags on the stands. So much shit I’ve seen die on me, friends, or literally go up in smoke or flames that if I can’t replace it, my mind doesn’t want to use it. And this to the point where I’m about to re50b to replace my ev635a because they sound a little different but are still made.

I didn't hot plug it, or hot un-plug it, I know better when it comes to that at least. What confuses me is that the mic was working perfectly last night when plugged in just as it was when this problem showed up! maybe the pins in the connectors didn't go in the right place and that messed something up over the course of the day? I just hope whatever is wrong in the mic is not crazy expensive to fix.

One of my 47T's has been cross threaded too, must have been one of my engineers. Probably cannot take it off now (I don't want to damage it). I have just left the cable permanently screwed to the mic.
The Aluminium used is way too soft for threads - and the threads are also quite tight and stiff (on both of my mics).

Maybe talk to Heiserman first about the best solution. It doesn't sound like you are the first to have this problem. Let us know how this resolved. Blue / Red used to make some heads that would fit AKG fine thread but they always misthreaded so they eventually dropped them.

I did hotplug the XLR to the preamp from the mic's tube PSU. But as far as I know that isn't a problem. You can't hot plug the MIC into the PSU while PSU is on. Hot plugging to a preamp while PSU is on doesn't cause problems.
I did just try to misalign the pins intentionally just now. I can't. The connectors on the mic and cable can't even be bullied into it. So it's impossible that I misaligned the pins for the connection between mic and mic cable. I don't get how crossthreading the mic could have resulted in it not working.
The only thing I can think of is that I put my Heiserman power supply directly on top of my Flea 47 power supply when I set up things last night. But I don't think putting a psu ontop of another psu would result in a mic not working...

But I don't think putting a psu ontop of another psu would result in a mic not working... Although not good practice, hot plugging the output of the PSU XLR to pre-amp isn't usually a problem as the phantom power for the mic is supplied by the mic PSU. Though it's best to have the phantom power off on the pre-amp side as a tube mic doesn't need 48v (as I said it's supplied by the PSU) plus technically speaking XLR can't short out 48v in the way TRS can on a patch bay during insertion. I can't see how putting one PSU on top of another would cause an issue - maybe on top of your kitchen induction ring might be an issue - but surely not another PSU - they're in metal boxes, earthed and electrically isolated. Life is full of strange coincidences, so it's possible the cross threading is not why the mic failed. There is a tiny possibility if you cross threaded the cable the slight change in angle made a pin not fully engage and that caused something to fail in the mic and or PSU. Either way, it's off to the manufacturer for a repair. The bill is horrible, but the experience gained is valuable - you'll never cross another thread again on anything - ever!

Drag, but just get it fixed properly and maybe leave it connected in future.
Tony helped me with my mk-u47 troubleshooting, great advice in his first post.

It may very well be a cold solder joint in the cable jack.

I had a much more subtle (capsule) issue and contacted Heiserman about it (posted about this on RGO somewhere): I had to pay for shipping but they gave me VIP treatment essentially (and I’m no VIP!) —> my H47t came back sounding better than I’d ever heard it before (I was second owner).
It sucks to be in your position but I think Heiserman will get you straightened out, no doubt.
Good luck! -Chris

It may very well be a cold solder joint in the cable jack. Otis, this is the first simple thing I’d test after checking fuse inside the psu? get a multi meter and check continuity from pin to pin on the cable, then check each pin on the cable to every other pin on the cable for shorts, eliminate the cable as the problem

What a drag about the cross threading. That does suck. I'm a tech so I'd do some metering to see what stopped functioning. The fact that all you did was turn it off, tells me it might be power supply related. Possibly the tube went out. Most likely it's not a huge issue. To me, the only huge issue is a capsule issue, but those are really rare. No sound at all does seem power related. Hope you get it up and running quickly. I've been there.

Hi there. So sad to hear about your problem.
Let me know how you go as I am just starting a batch of U47 parts next week and if you don’t have a cost effective option and have a bit of time, I can make some parts for you.
Please don’t feel that I am trying to tread on any toes as I am not and who knows; Eric may have some spares laying around but if not, rather than an entire new casing purchase, I can run off the part as long as it the same as an original.
Please remove this post if it is deemed inappropriate as Eric and I are friends and ai wouldn’t want to upset anyone.
Cheers.
Ben

I once did it to a cursed AKG C24 the aluminium is very soft on those screw on connectors. Thanks for the warning I'll be vigilant with my pair I love.

I make a point of being most vigilant... With my pair too. BTW again AFAIK the lovely (in her day) Judith Durham* (The Seekers) used that AKG mic, on at least some of their hits. They did OK. Sold over 50 Million records! Chris *Absolutely incredible Soprano voice. Tony and Paulie Walnuts would both agree.

Thanks for the warning I'll be vigilant with my pair I love. those Tuchel connectors crossthread easier than you'd think with aluminum! I like how beefy they are, but they are a bit of a PITA… Did repair work on a C24 that ended up having a bad connection inside the pivoting part of the cable.

Just to update, Dave and the heiserman team have been extremely helpful, responsive and understanding, and have assured me they will get my mic back up and running as soon as possible.
They’ve a pleasure to deal with on the customer service side, me and Dave had a great conversation and I could tell he is very passionate about what he does and I know I’m in great hands if something goes wrong which is awesome and appreciated

Final update: my mic is back, sounding amazing and all issues are completely remedied at no charge from Heiserman, they even gave me a new metal mic connection piece which was extremely kind of them, since I ruined mine and it would have been an eyesore to look at. I couldn’t be happier with their customer service. Dave and Donald are great guys!
