Introducing MBSI A Modern Classic
MBSI is a loving and faithful recreation of one of the most successful custom built consoles in the United States.
Custom built by the technicians at MCI for studio C at Criteria Studios, Miami FL, this console was used in the production of dozens of hit records that sold millions of copies.
Artists such as Eagles, Eric Clapton, the Bee Gees, and Grand Funk Railroad chose this room and this Console to work with some of the world's best producers including Tom Dowd and the legendary Bill Szymczyk.
We teamed up with Make Believe and Bill Szymczyk to bring this legendary console to your DAW for the first time.
You can learn more about MBSI and get a free 30-day demo here.

If I could pluck one engineer from the pantheon and work with them it would probably be Bill Szymczyk. So, of course I'm gonna check this out.

Sounds kinda cool. If I bought it, it would be because of lore and personal vibe bias, not because it does anything I can’t already do in the DAW.

Or, “hey, these very limited choices played a role in Bill S. crafting these sonics that I love, so maybe there’s something to these particular limitations” to put a sunnier framing on it.

I was on the beta team and I will say this plug-in is really great and is on every mix I do.

I have another console built for Tom Dowd ca 1968 (Phil Iehle designed CADDCO from Atlantic C), and the faders are reversed.

Once you get your head around it I bet you will find it produces a very classic sound that is quite useful.

I remember reading, or maybe in the movie, that Tom Dowd said the idea was that you were bringing the sound closer or further from the listener. Somehow that didn't catch on.

But I really don't need another console type plugin. where are the drugs? does it include drug settings that change the audio playback through the plugin but not how the signal is processed through it? That should be a new frontier of plugins. The channel strip could easily control a monitoring insert.

The compression sounds old in a good way as well....

Distortion is slightly interesting. EQ is interesting but very limited. The Suppressor is totally useless. Their marketing was right. Unfortunately the replacement compressor is also almost totally useless. Only slow isn't massively distorted and you already own a ton of things better than it for smacky overshoots. The plugin seems to get in the way. Like the rest of the Make Believe plugins, it feels rather silly.
The plugin reminds me a lot of the Fuse TCS-68 Tascam MIDISTUDIO 688 channel strip strip which I own which is quite silly and cumbersome but has better metering. Like the Tascam strip exists, it's cool that it exists, I've used it on lo-fi, it would've been better if I hadn't use it, and it's very stupid.

This is a really great piece of software if you would take the time to mix with and not analyze so much.

This is a really great piece of software if you would take the time to mix with and not analyze so much. It’s another very limited piece of software based off an old channel strip from way back when with very limited utility, filled with both emulated analog and digital artifacts included. It will neither solve the frequency problems with modern recordings nor control their dynamics. It will not bring back the musicians who didn’t need such control and for people like them, is just another thing that gets in the way. If you stack up instances to try to establish more control with its limited filters and mostly defective dynamics, you will get unwanted distortion and phase shift.
