Yep...that's what I've got...
And when I said headroom...it just sounds like that...where it only happens on peaks...Just wondering if my Helios is sick. I mean - I'm only using like 15 to 20 db from it...

Ah, in the other thread about the helios, we found that in the schematic, the gain is not staged well in that module, so that you would indeed have input headroom issues IIRC.. The Helios console internal signal levels are lower than others and the input needs a little padding for signals from another make of device, or at least changes in gain staging between the input and output amps.

Headroom comnplaints seem universal to explain anything irregular. I have found bays will affect sound quality in a negative way. You can connector contamination issues and diode like electrical effects. You have stray capacitance of the cable. Yes, a 30 foot run of Mogami snake will eat away your top end air.
It's easy to test and compare.

I haven't read the link yet, but this is the 500 series...so I would imagine it's a little different

OK...so I think this was the whole chain of events as to what has happened. I just got a replacement set of tubes (I still have my 6386 in there) from Phil Moore for my Sta-Level. I had suspected that I had a tube going bad because I could hit the desk and hear a spike of distortion...microphonic tube(s) I guess. Anyway - it still worked, things just sounded a little anemic...thin. I switched over to the WA76 to track something and promptly over-compressed a singer...couldn't hear the top was fuzzy until the playback. But it made me wonder if I had an issue with the Helios or my patchbay was degrading the sound. The Helios is a finicky piece...when it's right, and gain staged correctly, it's freaking awesome. I have always used the Helios at super low input - around 15db in various incarnations of in-line pads, -20 pad on the Helios then cranking it up (the impedance changes though)...but it was just making me paranoid.
Once I put these new tubes in the Sta...holy shit. Night and Day. Back to nirvana. No essiness anymore. Maybe it won't take me as long to recognize a tube problem next time.
