I was to mount some mics to the front wall/high up for room mics and have been trying to find some decent Omni’s that aren’t too bright or too big that would be good just to leave up permanently. Oktava MK-012-01 with omni capsules came to mind but wasn’t sure if there was anything in the $2-$300 used range that’s a large diaphragm that might fit the bill as well

Hmm... Other than an EV 635a? Lemme think. Chris

Good territory for the TapeOp style "omni in an XLR plug" DIY, using electrets. I've swapped various things around, including those, as wall mics on the live gig and they all do the job fine. Who are those shotgun shell people? They must have a cheap omni. Line Audio, if you can get'em.

The Line Audio certainly seem interesting. No US distributor but ~ $650 for 4 of them (I’d like a pair in two different room) isn’t bad at all.

Shure ksm141s are good in omni. And fairly affordable.

The Avenson omnis might be great there. The Octava are always a good choice. These, too. I've actually had their stereo mic up for a room mic on the last couple of things. I did their 'box special' many years ago and got the 2 omni, 2 cardioid and the stereo mic. They are a fun time. Plus it's amusing to show clients the shotgun shell microphones. My one gripe id that the cardioid aren't the RED mics, Heart-Blood, how hard is that? I have to remember that the colors are illogical everytime I use them.

I used to use those all the time on drum rooms, but it's been almost 10 years since I've worked in that studio. I remember them being fairly bright though, because I had a VERY thin set of tea towels that I used to throw over them to tame the cymbal top end a bit in the room (feel free to correct me because again, it's been a while ). I would point them down at the floor, lay the towels over the top of them. When I think omni, it's not just a consideration of "this pattern picks up everything". Omni means less proximity effect and generally more open sounding on the top end (brighter). If it were me and you end up with a multi pattern mic with the typical cardioid/figure 8/omni, I would try figure 8 first. I can't think of any omni mics that I've tried in that price range that weren't pretty bright in omni.

The Line Audio are flat, and there's a number of classical remote recordists who've posted favorable comparisons against Scheops/Neumann/etc.

There are always a couple of guys making some cool affordable omnis, most of these ( not Line Audio or Octavia) have a dirty little secret, they use a QC’ed version of the little Panasonic Omni Capsule you can buy on eBay for under $5.00, for years Earthworks used this capsule the difference in price between models was the QC standard the capsule met. Yeah it’s amazing the power of New Glarus Spotted Cow or Door County Cherry in quantity. However don’t buy those capsules off of EBay they are probably the ones that didn’t meet someone’s standards.

Look into PZM mics. I've got 2 PZM mics mounted on 2' x 2' plexiglass panels Panels help to pick up more low end. These are mounted 16' high in the corners of the back wall of the tracking room. Great natural room sound

As I put it to Ryan Succup when he was kicking for the Chiefs and lived down the hall “ I’m a chiefs fan but I’m a Packers Owner” & I have ridden in the Weiner Mobile😁

Figured I'd take a chance and picked up some Line Audio Omni1 microphones. Figure if I don't like them I'll be able to get close to what I paid back since so there are no US dealers.

Line audio have gotten a lot of attention from Classical folks to start with.
SE8's would be good too.
KSM141's are okay, bit bright.

I have a friend that does field recordings and he's recommended these to me before. They're from a company called Sonorous Objects. I haven't tried them but I'm always tempted for the price. Here's the link, hopefully I did this right. so1

Sean you will probably be able to make a profit, simply because most don’t want to deal with importing them! Honestly, I often get things from the UK faster than I do from the states. These went out today and will arrive on Wednesday. I ordered a guitar pick up from Alto Music in New York and it won't be here until Friday. I just use a credit card with no foreign transaction fee and the shipping (around $50) is what I would pay in sales tax here in Tennessee.

I totally get it, about 3 months ago I ordered a cable from GC’s shipped from their warehouse 7 miles away, and some Pheonix with strain relief from Thomann shipped from Germany, want to guess what arrived first😁 yup shipping from Germany was quicker than from the verbs.
