The 1272 is the two stage. The 1290 is the full preamp. Technically I think the 1290 never had the LO1166 output but had the T1310 inductor as a collector load of the output transistor and an unbalanced output.

This appears to be the 1290 preamp. The 1073 is an EQ module. They address this in the video but said they will still call it 1073 as that’s how most people refer to the preamp. Even AMS Neve still call it a 1073 when it’s just the preamp

I’m really surprised the 51x box’s didn’t catch on, I guess it made way too much sense and would’ve given everybody a lot more quality in products like neve and twin servos at a lower price that run on 24v rails, it costs money and real estate to up voltage

Got mine built. need to calibrate and test it on something. NOt sure what, don't have anything in the works.. Was too DIY to be a main stream thing. DIY market came up with it and propped it up for a while then even the ones that were for it stopped supporting it. So who knows. Was too confusing for customers i know is what CAPI dropped it.

Plus with the +- rails you had access to 30+ volts so a Neve wasn’t a problem if you slapped a regulator or voltage multiplier on the module. We are no longer in the era of every other manufacturer offering their own modular format , 500 is the default standard, it may not be the best but at least we have a standard!

Very nice looking unit. Video has great details. Wish you could order it assembled. This. And wish someone would do a 1U instead of 500 series. I think AML does one but without a faceplate, weird.

I bet once the initial rush ends they will offer it as a built option. They do that for other units. Or I'll build it for you. Not too hard of a build at all. Think I spent about 4-5 hours on it going slow?

Blackdawg do you mean you machine the face plates for the AML 1U version? Or you build these kits in general?

Blackdawg do you mean you machine the face plates for the AML 1U version? Or you build these kits in general? no no. I'd build the 500 kits. The front panel for the AML is availble from others though. I think Don Classics has a knob and faceplate kit for it. And then you get a case from other places.

I have one. Just haven't used it. Don't have a session that I will try it for in a while.

Any updates on this kit? Has anyone built/tried one? JMO, As a diy obsessed fella myself with a metric shit ton of projects under my belt, i can tell you with just watching that video that you won't find a better replica/version of that pre, his build documentation is insanely detailed and he has a fix it program if you can't get it done yourself

Just kinda curious how it stacks up sonically to some of the other 73’s out there. I’m sure it sounds killer.

This is not the greatest video, but it does feature a shoot out between the DIYRE 1073 and the AMS Neve 1073 80 series. You have to go to 17 mins or so in. The rest of the video is him taking apart and testing the unit to make sure he put it together correctly, which is kind of funny at moments.
Sonically, it seems to feel like most 500 series Neve units. It sounds good, but light by comparison. Although, if you watch the whole video you may question if he actually put it together properly. lol.

Light by comparison seems about right. Sounds similar to an AML IMHO.

Most 500 series Neve style modules I’ve heard have the same quality. Not sure why. It’s just something I’ve noticed. The BAE 500 seems to nail it best. I haven’t heard the Audio Scape, but I’ve heard good things about their Neve 500 series preamp.
