I had this happen a couple weeks ago. I used Waves Vitamin. It brought the track back to life... A bit and made it usable. I then added a little saturation/distortion to the upper mids and it worked fine

MaxxBass works well for that. Helps create those lower and upper mid harmonics. Doesn’t MaxxBass use expansion to boost the upper mids as opposed to generating harmonics? If there’s nothing much there to boost it may not be very effective. This bass thread brings back memories of a client from hell! 😵💫 My understanding is it generates harmonics that weren’t originally there, which matches what I hear when I use it.

Distortion of some kind. Or maybe consider blending EZ Bass into the original performance. I was going to suggest EZ Bass, but then I remembered Johnkenn sold his EZ Bass license to me, and then I sold it to wiz. After I sold it to wiz, I realized it could do exactly this - take a poorly recorded bass part and essentially assign a new bass to it. Once I realized that, I wished I'd kept it. You might want to check it out, Johnkenn. They probably have some kind of Memorial Day sale going on this weekend. All these distortion methods others have brought up might work to one degree or another, but having the part transcribed and "played" by a different bass with actual mids and actual highs in it is honestly the best way. If EZ Bass can pull that off without having to actually replay the bass (which it sounds like isn't a live option), then that's a major win in my book. Yeah that's a great idea actually...maybe I'll download it again. But this is really the first time I've ever had an issue with bass tone coming from the studio I record in all the time. I think he's playing with a foam mute - so that probably makes sense as to why it sounds like this.

Try a tilt eq: softube, tdr, goodhertz Multiband the crap out of it with first order crossovers if it gets too weird: dynone, oldtimer mb, unisum (multiband detector)

It wasn’t a disaster, just not a great tone. I think I ended up using the Ampeg SVT with the treble switch on…and eq. But these are all good suggestions.

When his happens to me my first attempt is with the plugin Wavesfactory Spectre. It's perfect for me when something needs to be re-eq'd but eq isn't cutting it. it feels like eq'ing but with harmonics.

Duplicate the track. Insert sansamp plug. Low eq all the way off, blast the treble, preamp up 2/3rds. Start there. Flip the phase On the sansamp track. Turn the fader all the way down, turn your monitors super low, and start bringing up that fader. When you can just start to hear it - STOP.
Go back to normal volume and adjust the rest of the Sansamp parameters at that point to taste.
Seriously it works great. The free plugin that every Pt user has.

Especially the phase flip.

The old tone knob rolled off thing, frequently a tragedy. “But that’s how you record.” Um, no.
