Guys, just before i drop £2,700 on a Lynx AN (adat) - does anyone know or used the Revolution EXP?
It looks to be a decent 8x8 adat expander for me to expand my RME digital interface card. I currently use a HEDD 192 and Avocet over AES with my RME PCIe card and it has an ADAT port free.
I just need an 8x8 adat ADA to throw a few tracks through my racks for a little bit of hybrid mixing on a few choice channels.
Vox Bass Drums
I'll be rendering to file for easy recall and the main mix will run live through the HEDD 192 into my HW stereo bus chain.
The Revolution EXP is £850 .... so way cheaper than the Lynx, the specs for dynamic range etc are very average but that doesn't mean it won't sound very good. The specs for the Lynx AN are of course stella and it has a great reputation as a top end converter.
What to do .... am I just being "cheap" (so to speak) and I need to save a bit longer and get the Lynx AN?

Another option is a Midas XL48 preamp. It has Adat and aes outputs. I used it for years with my first gen lynx Aurora. When I upgraded, I went with the 24 channel version of the Aurora n so I don't use the Adat anymore, but I do use the preamps.

I haven’t used the exp, but I’ve mentioned a lot that the Revolution 6x6 is a fantastic sounding interface…when I expand, that’s what I’m getting.

How much are you distorting things? if you’re using some stupidly distorted stuff, will it matter that much if it’s half decent and doesn’t use some jrc or njm junk and has linear phase anti alias filters? I doubt it matters what you use in front of an 1176 or la2a makeup stages pushed and like even the cheap junk Japanese opamps are better than what was used in some 70s gear like an La4.
A lynx aurora n sort of replaces everything you have interface and conversion wise.
The noise specs don’t matter in the real world unless it’s a Focusrite Scarlett or Presonus. Delta sigma chips are linear to their noisefloor, which is flooded with dither noise. The noise floors of all the modern ones are below a quiet mic amplified by a quiet pre and the quiet hvac systems in purpose built studios. Of course the cheaper chips junk uses often have inadequate built in filters and cheap current to voltage converters built in.
The main differences are the analog line stages, build, clocking, parts, filters, and digital code. Like using total mix to gain stage will truncate the audio. Something like Lynx or DAD is all there and someone like Apogee or Prism is all there but the software can be spotty and Dangerous just doesnt even bother with drivers and onboard mixers or in even making a multichannel ad. RME really cheaps out the analog parts of their multichannel interfaces but they’re trying to hit a price point half that of Lynx and UAD sits both above and below RME but their multichannel apollos try to make the money back from selling plugs. Of course now they are firesaling the plugs like everyone else.

Good points Dan, I have thought, I’ll be sending to tube gear with circuits designed in the 1950 and 60’s so kinda makes a joke out of me worrying about dynamic range and distortion figures !! I’m very happy with my Avocet and HEDD 192 …. The HEDD has a ballsy musical rock n roll sound I really love. You’re right - the Lynx N is really a replacement for the lot - and as I can’t afford to double up - I think I can dismiss the Lynx. I’m down to the BLA or a Ferrofish unit Pulse 16 or A32 Pro … at least I’m thinning down the options. Thanks.

I have a Black Lion Revolution 2x2 for my secondary rig. It's so crazy cheap for what it delivers. I think it sounds fantastic. Very musical and easy to listen to but also great clarity and definition. I notice less fatigue after long listening.
I would not be surprised if the 8x8 EXP would be chosen over some very high end converters in blind shootouts. Personally I hope they release an 8x8 or 16x16 interface with 8 or more of the mic preamps in their usb interfaces as I think those are sleepers too.
Personally I would easily choose the Black Lion over Ferrofish.

Also, IIRC BLA do mods to the UA Apollo? So surely there 8x8 EXP comes pre-modded (so to speak) and their best foot forward in it's standard form.

How is the support, drivers, software, etc? That’s equally as important.

The current Revolution usb interfaces are class compliant so no drivers needed on Mac. On windows you have to download drivers and all that jazz.
IMO the build quality suggests that support will probably not be needed. Feels very solid in your hands.

My revolution 2x2 purchased 11/11/21 died a few months ago. I replaced it with an M6 for my portable rig. Just a heads up.
-edit-
Sharing my experience regarding travel with it.

Oh, that’s not good to hear. My RME digital interface card is 20 years old and is still in pristine as new condition after daily use for two decades! So that’s my benchmark for comparison. Your 2x2 should have lasted for more than 3 years - did BLA offer a remedy?

Email me at seth@raddist.com and I’ll make sure you get taken care of. I can probably count on a single hand the number of units that have failed worldwide so that definitely shouldn’t be the case

A big UK online dealer offers a separate 10 year warranty for an extra £70, would that be a sensible add on cost?

forget counting on one hand when it comes to the exp, I can quite literally count it on a single finger with that item. same with the 6x6. Obviously the 2x2 has been out FAR longer than those 2 but all in all, interfaces as a whole are actually probably the most reliable gear we have ever made.

Lynx Aurora (n) has been a super solid purchase for me, and I have signal chains that are hyper clear/realistic (mic - Gordon Model 5 - aurora (n) conversion) and some more harmonic stuff (mic - chandler REDD.47 pre - Manley Vari Mu compressor - aurora (n) conversion) --> Lynx captures it essentially as I hear it, zero complaints and zero thoughts of upgrading since purchasing (first time that happened with conversion for me). Just a happy Lynx user chiming in - was worth waiting/saving longer for me.

Just a happy Lynx user chiming in - was worth waiting/saving longer for me. Here in the UK 8 channels of Lynx N with the ADAT option will cost me $4700!! (£3700) That’s just silly, for essentially monitoring throwing a vocal, bass, drums through some hardware. I have a HEDD 192 and Avocet monitor controller so I really don’t need anything for monitoring, rendering channel inserts or my HW stereo bus chain. My only reservation with the BLA Exp are it’s very average on paper specs - the Clarrett plus spec read better than my Crane Song converters! The BLA website says the EXP was tuned by ear - that sounds a bit odd to me for a converter. I want something to capture with pristine clarity not add someone’s aural interpretation of “good sounding” converters. That said, BLA has built its rep on modding other peoples converters so you’d imagine there own would be pretty great sounding, and it has that fancy BLA clock which might be better than the clock in my 16 year old HEDD 192 - it’s possible I guess. They just seem to have strange marketing blurb that puts users like me off a bit.

Black Lion won’t break the bank, so it’s worth trying out. Live with it for a few months, and see how it’s working for you. You can always use it till you save up the bread for a lynx if that’s really what you’re after. I’ve debated selling my Lynx here and there in favor of something else in order to pocket some cash, but it’s just so good, it’s hard to let go. I have 4 preamps in mine, and they are really fantastic as well.

After some considerable thought I’ve decided to probably get the Ferrofish A32 Pro which is a fantastic sounding converter (I’ve heard one) using the very lastest ESS technology chips. The 32 channels of I/O will give me the flexibility I need and future proof my place going forward. There’s control over filter choices and extremely flexible routing which will be a big help. Just need to grab a RayDAT card for my new PC and I’ll be good to go
