Would love to hear the results. Just wondering. If you don't mind me asking and without getting into specific details, Are these sesions out of pocket for you? How many songs and hours booked? How much would a(demo)session like this cost? Great work

JK - when you get into a studio with players of that caliber do you even think about the gear? I'd be mesmerized and glued to the performers. No way i could handle looking at Pro Tools on a monitor with that going on in the room. Maybe you get used to it? You're fortunate to have that scenario - thanks for sharing, looks like a dream…... Yeah - I honestly never even think about gear when I'm there. I think sometimes I take Nashville for granted! These players are just disgustingly great. It's not just heir ability to play, it's their ability to hear a worktape, go in and literally sound like a record the first take. I try to bring in a good work tape - sometimes I'll even build a track - for them to get an idea of what I'm going for...any "producing" I do is 90% casting the right players. I would like to think they're sometimes inspired by good songs - or at least not having to play shit. At least that's what they've told me and they continue to let me book them . I just sit back, throw in the occasional idea and try not to get in the way of the amazing work that they do. And the engineers in this town. Damn. I've used Adam here at sound emporium for a while...and it's like a well oiled machine. Everything works, all the time, in a split second. These are records getting made at demo rate. That's the truth of the matter. (Of course, if I were to release it as such I would have to upscale what I paid them) If you guys are interested, I'll post the finished product of that song when I'm done. I'm gonna mix it, so that's the only drawback Very interested in hearing the final product or the board mix / both. It has to be a thrill just to hear these guys playing your tunes. Very inspirational, this is what it's all about.

I was meant to go to Nashville as part of a USA trip last year.. but my shoulder crapped out and I had surgery that went south, and couldn't play let alone move my arm for the better part of a year. It was a huge bummer, I was going to record in Memphis as well, at Sun. Oh well. I am hoping next year.
I would love to get an idea of what a session like this would run. If I do make it over next year, I would love to book something like this and do it.
and John, thanks for posting this, and please do post up a board and finished mix.
Actually, what I would most like to hear is the rough you played them, followed by what they came up with. That would be way cool.

wiz depends on if you're wanting demo rate, which will be just as amazing as if you were to do the master. Musicians of the caliber that would amaze you for demo are usually around $260 per session + cartage if they require it which is usually around $125, but that is for the whole day, not session. If you don't have charts, you'll need a session leader, usually the most in demand person you get will be that guy, he'll make double scale. Sometimes though, if you get up and comers (they're amazing too) you can get away from the session leader, and a lot of times they'll go over session if you need them to, they probably won't ask for anything, but slipping them some extra in cash will make you a guy they want to work with and help out in the future. Studio rates usually hover around $60-$100 per hour or you can ball out and get a room at like blackbird for around $1,200 per day. It's a 9-9 with two grace hours for lunch and dinner at most studios if you book a day rate. Assistants are usually $25 an hour or about $250 a day, if you need one. Those numbers are not exact but pretty close. You can usually get musicians off the card, but it's better to do it on the card because of their benefits and if it's your first gig no one will look at you weird, some may offer it to you, some will offer to do things over the wire if you couldn't get it done in the studio as well, that's always off the card. You'll have fun for sure, your tunes will go to another level as well. Nashville players are the best in the world, and the coolest cats to be around.

So I end up selling waaayyyy less than that. I used to work in places like that in the 1980s - as an artist, not as an engineer - and I remember that awesome feeling being there. BTW - if you plan on selling less than 10,000 copies, you can do demo rate. Most people are lucky to sell 1000 copies these days. And even many 'label' releases are selling less than 10,000. The work is just as rewarding but the financial rewards are very disappointing today.

It always amazed me how many people would save their penny's for a short time for an a room, when they could have saved some $$ or spent more time in the B room and gotten very similar results no mater what studio it is the B room always has this stigma !
