I'm in the middle of recording my own EP and I've been gravitating towards Helios plugin eqs while working on rough mixes, UA and the Plugin Alliance one. I'd never used them much but recently I just find the right frequencies right way with these on pretty much all instruments ( can't make it work on kick drum though, I'll stick to the 1073 on that ).
Wondering what my hardware options are.
I'm looking at the Iron Age H9, the H2 500 series eq, Stam I guess, not sure if they're still making these, The Olympic eqs are pretty much unobtanium. Anything I'm missing?
I've read some mixed reviews about the H2 500 version and definitely can't afford their larger one.
Would love to get feedback on the Iron age, the H2!
Thanks!

I was in a similar situation. I didn't up getting any Helios stuff, but if I was going to, I'd go Iron Age all the way. Pre and EQ in one module. Price is great and every interaction I've had with them as a company has been great. If I was rich, I might grab the reissue stuff, but I'm not and I'm not sure how much better it would actually be.

I bought a used Lh95 so I’m sure the H9 sounds great. I’m in the EU so the H2 500 eq is the same price as getting an H9 after paying import duties so I’m not sure which one to get. They both seem very well built

I’ve only had the H2 0011 eq’s, but they were awesome. I understand there’s a different input xformer they use in the 500 now compared to when I first heard, but pre wise, I thought the original 500 versions could get a little spiky in the upper mids. The full size 0011 didn’t. Never tried the 500 eq’s though.

Response to the 500 version seems a bit lukewarm.

I talked to Tim a while back and they started using Danny Mesanovic's transformers...I'm not sure if that's what was in the 0011 from the beginning or not.

The Germanium Olympic 65 are the most authentic 60’s sound. The sound of The Stones etc. The Relios look hilarious inside but those guys are clever. I don’t think much of the other clones that are based on later Helios like Olympic 2 , the H9 is so clean you may as well use a plug.

I’d say also add the UTA EQ to the list, as I think - if my memory is right- was based off Eric Valentine’s Helios board? Obviously not a clone at all. Kinda drool worthy though.

Yeah I had the Olympic preamps and they were great, still liked my tube pres better but for 500 as good as it gets. Kind of wish I'd gotten pre/eqs when they were readily available, now it's pretty much impossible from what I understand.

I've thought about that UTA 500 too, but it just seems like it might be too much. With 4 knobs per band it seems like it might be a little overwhelming.

Will these be for tracking, mixing or both? I didn't realise the Iron Age stuff emulated the Helio's gear - I'll have to check those out.

I track myself with closed-back headphones so it's easy to make eq mistakes during tracking. Though I tend to always boost 1,4k on my bass tracks these days so I'd probably be eqing a little on the way in on some instruments. Maybe it's just a phase but man the Helios curves are just so cool sounding.

Yeah I got them pretty cheap given that they're not super "high end" anymore but they sound just fine.

Just a heads up, I designed the H9 during COVID as an open source project to take my mind off things, and to give back to the community. The project files are still up over on groupdiy, and you can always make a pair yourself that way. We just got so many requests to make them that we made a batch, and they kept selling out.

Very cool! Yeah I'm not particularly handy with a soldering iron so if I get some I'm getting them directly from you!

After hearing that Spencer Lee Band tune, I kinda want to sell everything and buy all UTA stuff and hope EV’s sensibility rubs off with it.
