Hey everyone! I wanted to share something I've been working on. Basically, I'm gonna be attempting to recreate some of my favorite records and then discussing how I did it and what I learned in the process. The song I've started with is Hysteria by Def Leppard, produced by one of my all-time heroes Mutt Lange. Would love to know what you all think! The first video is jus the performance and the second video is the full session deep dive for any of you who'd like to see how it all went together. Anyway, I had a lot of fun working on it and appreciate any time you guys spend checking it out!

To say you were successful understates just how well you did this.

Awesome man! I appreciate all the hard work that went into it. As simple as it is, that picking guitar riff is so iconic for their sound and has always been a favorite of mine. You nailed it, great job!

This almost gives me the confidence to post my “I Can’t Tell You Why.” I tried to do the same thing.

The fact that Chris didn’t comment on the fact that you had a leg up on the drummer speaks volumes 😁 Great job.

I've always loved this album and learned so much trying to pick it apart and learn the individual parts that build a soundscape that is still relevant today~ Thanks for sharing, cademan7, well done!

Whoa! I don’t like the music or the original album production that much but you nailed it. Killer use for the Neold Warble, that’s based off an old dictation machine I guess. I’ll have to try it for that. Goodhertz Trem Control is a really nice tremolo plug you can cleanly automate too.

Great job! Awesome to see young cats digging Rock. I was driving through the country today after fly fishing and I put on my 80s metal play list and I felt amazing. I might sound like Robert Kennedy Jr, but there is a physical impact that rock music has that is unique to the genre. The Beatles knew it, so did Chuck Berry, Led Zeppelin and Mutt Lange. Great job! Now take that muscle memory and go write something of your own and post it for us.

Mutt Lang has such a strong signature as a producer - it’s those BV’s!
I don’t think Def Leppard on their own would have come up with this arrangement or sound.
Just goes to show how arrangement and production style made hits back then.
The OP did a good job with this cover.

Appreciate all the kind words! The main goal with all of this is to get my ears sort of “tuned in” to the tone and balance of classic records that i love. Working with an exact reference seems to be a great way to reveal weaknesses in my own workflow and skillset and im already taking away things that are positively affecting my day-to-day work producing records. Plus it’s just fun lol. I’ve got a couple more Mutt Lange tracks in the works but I’ll be exploring many other styles after that so stay tuned!

Yeah, I actually forget that Neil’s Warble does other things since I mainly just use the “wow” portion of it. I’m addicted to tremolo and vibrato pedals/plugins 😂 such a great effect

I got to there and have never found any use for it before and just own it because of the guys who made it.

Nothing like a Mutt Lange mix. Even better than pure Poochini! (Sorry Plush)
I did hear however... Nowadays the twain don't even meet. Neve-er. Chris
