I downloaded the UAD Studer 800 - 30 day demo for UAConnect. UA Connect updated and that seems to have really helped with the CPU throttling.
For $349, I won't buy it if I like it until it goes on sale. But it certainly has a nicer high end than the ATR, though not as tight. Feels a bit fluffy around the mid-section at first use, but I am just started with it.

Mixbus comp for sure is better that way(I think). I meant more of the other parts of the chain for flavoring/eq. LTL RGB with pentode and royal blue, prometheus pultec EQ saturation(maybe) and RND 542's with silk red. Makes quite a bit of change to the sound from the get go, but seems to work out pretty well lately. I see what you're getting at. I imagine that sounds quite nice! Yea, kind of an interesting starting point but I bet not to unlike running through a console and various gear in the older days. Stuff is dead flat in the box. But bus comp definitely should be mixed into. I've been balancing initially with some tutorial advice from Justin Colletti. Vocal or most important element fader goes up first and just tickles the bus comp needle then everything else comes up one by one(in order of importance) after that. Typically things hit about right that way each time GR wise.

Definitely wait for a sale. It's got a lot of sonic options with the 4 tape formulas, speeds, iec nab, calibration levels etc.

I use the studer A800 on most tracks in LUNA... and the ATR102 on the mix buss..... Honestly if I take care tracking... the Studer on the track, the API Summing on each bus and the ATR102 on the mix buss along with the API2500 and the mix is 85% done cheers Wiz

I actually hear it as the student adding top and bottom. But especially adding to the top end. After listening to it on a set of good monitors, I'd have to agree with your assessment.

I love the Studer for tracking certain things like kick and snare. I don't like the high end hiss it adds to cymbals always. It can be a great way to add some grit to a bassline too, but tbh I usually end up removing it in the mixing phase. I think it's a great tool to use for separation between textures of different sounds. Overall, I love what it adds, but at the same way I don't like what it seems to take away sometimes.
All that being said, I track through real Studers all the time, both tape and console wise, and the real thing has an immediate vibe to it. Love everything about real Studer equipment. The UAD plugs *almost* get you there, but still missing some type of depth element, can't put my finger on it.

I really l like the sound of ATR on mix bus, but in my setup it seemed to narrow the stereo field pretty noticeably. Maybe that's accurate to the hardware? I don't know, but it kind of got in my head so I stopped using it for that purpose. Still love it for other things, especially tape delay.

Yeah, it's kind of like well it doesn't even matter if it's true or not. I'm fixated on it so it's got to go! On the other hand I probably complete 20 mixes with ATR on the mix bus and not once did it bother me before. So who knows. Either way, it's been relegated to mono channel and FX bus duty for the time being.

I can pull up and old session and see something I did and completely just forgot about...and if it sounds good, I'm like "I've failed on the 100 mixes I did without doing this..." But the truth is, nobody freaking knows.

It boosted the bass drum, but it feels muddy to me.
I never liked the Studer plug, I always use ATR-102 on the 2 bus. BUT.. if I want to try some tape on a track, I try Oxide, which I think is a less features version of UAD's Studer. It works nicely on a few tracks.

Has anyone here compared it with Satin? I just find that Satin outclasses all these other tape plugs. UAD Studer is not bad though and it does use a lot less cpu.

The UAD Studer makes the kick better but sounds like crap on the cymbals. I compared it with U-he Satin presets. Satin sounds nicer on the cymbals with less of an obvious headbump on the kick but on some of the presets, it's easy to make the kick transients crap out the tape.

Kick transients mixed and recorded in the modern style DO crap out tape. Haha. So maybe that's accurate. There's a reason that PHATTT!!!! kicks only became a thing in the digital era. So who knows... maybe this is a classic case where one plugin is more accurate to the original tool but the original tool got replaced for a reason. (I love tape sounds by the way, but there are just obviously things the modern ear expects that tape isn't good at.)

Yeah of course you can take out the actual hiss. I think I was talking more about the EQ of the entire plugin than the actual hiss. You can EQ it with the knobs too, but something about that plugin seems to mess with my high end sometimes no matter what I do, even when I try to EQ it. I could just be doing it wrong, but a lot of times high end material either ends up being way too dull (because I tried to remove the top end) or way too hissy.

All good and experiment with different tapes, but if it doesn’t sound right: it isn’t!

Which of the presets do you like best? I usually go with GP9. When I need to save cpu, I'll use Tapedesk or Phoenix instead of Satin. Never driving either of those two all that much. Maybe I'll try subbing in UAD Studer. Whenever I do a new computer build, hopefully I'll be able to significantly increase the amount of mono Satin instances I can use.

You know what I've been doing the last couple days that I like? Putting the Studer as the last insert on a reverb return track. Just has a smoothing or containing effect. Makes the verb sit in a nice way.

I changed my mind about the Studer, maybe they updated the algo in the plugin since the last time I had used it or something. The VST3 version I used last night was the perfect sauce for some vocals that weren't sitting right in a mix. It was the only thing that worked. Will be messing with it more soon on drums.

Nice. Sounds better. Have you tried the Ruletec EQ1? You can boost top and bottom, then use the "pultec trick" on the low end to get less of the mid-low bloom and tighten it all up. Would end up sounding similar I think.
