Easy... C414EB with brass capsule or Soyuz Bomblet. U67 is also good, but C414/Bomblet pointed towards the middle of the instrument is DONE. DW Fearn pre amp is also super saxxxxy for this application. Just avoid a U87AI whatever you do. HONK HONK HONK Agreed on avoiding the u87ai for a lot of saxophonists. Some sound good on it but most don’t, and there are better options IMO. Now the vintage 87’s can be nice on a lot of sax players.

Both myself and the Sax player loved some AKG c414s in omni mode on a tenor recently. I think the omni part was most important for that session. As others have said, placement is especially important with saxophone. Consider the full instrument and all the spots the sound comes from - it’s not just the bell.

I forgot to mention when I suggested the C414EB that omni is how I usually set it. Soyuz obviously doesn't have that option....

LOL except Darren Rahn and Dave Koz, of course!

You know who else would honk? Chris Wood. Especially in Traffic. I agree with Steve Winwood... That Chris was the "Soul" of the band. IMHO tremendous "feel" Player. Not that Steve and the other guys weren't great too. Including Dave Mason's tenure. Big fan of King Curtis and Junior Walker too. I was good friends with Chris Whynaught (RIP). Fine Sax player. Who sometimes played with Honk(!) and The Missiles of October. Also with Bobby Keys sometimes. Chris was a great singer too.
