However it's dead obvious in playback testing anyway..
With external pres they sound that different? Or you’re using the internal Pres against one another?

I know nothing about the SSL - Big Six? Is that right? That would be some shit if that thing's DA sounded better.

I might be misremembering.

I'm also very interested to hear the difference! Especially since the difference seems so big that it would possibly warrant a daw change for you.

I spent MLK day wiring my two Carbons into the patchbay, four Dsubs normalled to the Trident's channel inputs and bus outputs. Had been mainly using the primary Carbon's monitor outs to feed the monitor controller and the line i/o for inserts, but wanted a default tracking patch where all the inputs come up on a fader on the desk with sub-ms latency. Man it's nice to get back to working like that, can really hammer the Trident's line in gains for drum shells/speaker cones with the Carbon outs. Wow, be curious to hear a capture of what the SSL’s DAC is doing as well. Had one of those same desktop rail racks while I was playing with desktop console configuration, ended up with a pair of the mega-sized rolling ones to the left and right, as gear expands…

Good shout actually, I think the best thing to do when I get some time is to patch the Carbon's line outs into the same stereo channel as the audio playback via USB C (SSL) comes through. Then volume levels will be matched exactly plus I can see what actual difference the Carbon makes irrelevant of analog foibles. When I patched the MOTU into the SSL it sounded mainly like the SSL, there wasn't that much difference to be fair.
This should be a decent test and it would be ideal to keep a mini HDX rig going. The Carbon ain't cheap though so I'm keeping my options open..

Well, I did manage to test it out before my RMA window finished. When I patched everything through the SSL there really wasn't that much difference at all, the Carbon is slightly clearer (which is cool) and it is a better converter than the MOTU 1248 I suppose (which for the price I'd expect). However when doing a side by side comparison they honestly sound nothing like each other, for me its shown once again that a decent analog front end can be, in some circumstances very much worth it. Although this wasn't the plan, the Carbon was supposed to replace the SSL.. So my anti-bank friendly recommendation is get the Carbon & SSL Big Six or <insert decent desk here>. I will restate that just having a mixer or console isn't really the key to anything though, I've had thus far an SSL 4K, Soundcraft Ghost, Soundcraft MTK22 (oh a whim, had a Metric Halo interface at the time), Mackie Onyx 1640i and an A&H Zed R-16. Only one or two of those made any sort of appreciable difference.. It takes me a while but I always get there in the end.! Mystery solved, I'm keeping both (ouch my wallet weeps) and will start a new thread shortly for a more in depth look at the Carbon once I've sorted out the wreck that is my studio.

Absolutely very decent converters.

So, can anyone recommend some AAX DSP plugins for the Carbon? The Brainworx bx_console SSL 4000 E is currently on sale and I think that would cover a large part of it? Seems there's a BX mastering plug that you get with it so I'll give it a try, most of the heavy lifting is done by HW but why not. I'll test out the Arturia Rev Plate as well, could be cool?
Also there's a tapped delay, A/DA STD-1 which could be interesting? I sound like I'm going high pitched at the end of every sentence here.

The AMEK stuff is great, EQ 200, EQ 250 and Mastering Compressor. Bummer the newest releases, including the console AMEK 200, aren't supporting AAX DSP. I have duplicates of most of PA's AAX DSP titles if you're looking for a deal.

I have duplicates of most of PA's AAX DSP titles if you're looking for a deal. The "Amek" dynamics distort massively when you use the faster detector, unlike Kotelnikov (doesn't distort), the Weiss DS-1 (only distorts with attack/release settings so fast as to basically make it a clipper to make the attack/release switching misfire), and the MDWDRC2 (only the auto release trigger distorts the tops of transients or in the snap back). It's kind of pathetic Brainworx tried to model one of the most lauded compressors ever and they came up with an RMS compressor worse than a DBX 160.
The old school Sonnox Oxford Dynamics Limiter doesn't really distort like that despite being a lookahead limiter while not holding down or clipping the audio as much as L1 despite being from a similar time frame thanks to some clever programming tricks. The AAX DSP version just costs a ton if not on sale due to the hassle of programming for the DSP chips but you get what you pay for and the limited computational abilities of old DSP chips. It will still impose it's will over a drum performance a little too much instead of controlling it.
The Pro Audio DSP DSM 3 is fabulous though. Some bugs but it's Plugin Alliance so they will never be fixed.

The AAX DSP version of DSM3 was straight up broken until the native silicon update last August, it's now functionally equal to the native version. I find the stand-alone AMEK mastering compressor better than the dynamics sections of their various channel strips, but I've got four 160s in the rack as well so perhaps my needs are simple...

Does anyone know if plug-in alliance is compatible on M1 silicon yet? Still waiting for my free voucher to work on AAX. I haven’t checked in a while

I haven’t checked in a while Most everything was updated for native silicon last August, they botched the bx_bluechorus and Ampeg B-15N AAX, but the rest are running fine native for me.

I'm another satisfied Carbon user. Downsized from HDX, a Burl Mothership, 6 outboard Neve 31102's & 2 1073's about a year ago. They sounded awesome. But for a large price difference, I think I can still make quality recordings with the Carbon. Subjectively different, on the cleaner side, but I also use outboard preamps and compressors for some transformer weight. I use the expansion ADAT as well for larger sessions(drums.) AND, I am happy with the routing situation (headphone mixes, quickly changing from line, mic, or inst) at the press of a couple buttons. Really digging the quicker workflow for creative tasks.
