How tall are your ceilings? You could be getting some comb filtering from low ceilings. Sing on your knees, problem sorted.

In my ears opinion, comparing to my figure 8 NOHYPE LRM-V and figure 8 Cathedral Pipes Seville active ribbon, my Stager Hyper Cardioid SR-5 active ribbon is outstanding in my small space for saxophone, clarinet and flute.
I like my sound and that’s all that matters to me.

I don't know that anyone has info on why Beyerdynamic does anything. I really love a lot of their microphones( M160, M260, M201, M88, MC930), but they seem to care more about headphones =) The last run I saw of the M500 was the millenium edition in 2000, that was all silver, and weighs a metric ton. It was superseded by the TG V90r (which is also discontinued), but that uses a different resonator plate, and sounds a bit different (plus they screwed up the grill, in my opinion. It has a strong ping/resonance to it. It can be fixed with some foam inside the grill, but I digress) I repair a lot of Beyerdynamic ribbon mics. The M500 doesn't have the same top end that the M160 has, but I like it on vocals. Worth checking out if you can find one at a good price. Regards Jon The 500 never really sold well, they kept revamping the TG line trying to gain traction, as a dealer it felt like every year was a new class on “ Beyer stage mics” it was always confusing and if you had sold someone on a mic 2 years ago you probably couldn’t sell them a new one. For us there was usually more profit and internal pressure in selling the D/C’ed mics we had bought out. The one Beyer stage vocal staple wasn’t the 500 it was the M700, Cubby and a couple of Clair Brothers high profile FOH guys gravitated to it in the mid 90’s ( Eagles Hell Freezes over, Fleetwood Mac the Dance). Others followed but it never really made it onto mid level riders. Part of this was other than the top 3-5 touring companies Beyer didn’t sell direct so nobody really had inventory unless they were doing big festivals with A list acts ( Summerfest even dB and Clearwing were not direct). As wireless became more standard Beyer had a decent product, but always had to play different, they developed their own head mount, you can buy an Ambient adapter to use a Shure on a Beyer Head but not vice versa and nothing for the other 2 majors Lectrosonics or Sennheiser. They Never sold a 500 or 700 wireless or head. It’s been about 30 years but I think I remember Steve Gidinski when he was VP of Beyer USA telling me the main difference besides the tapped Handle on the 500 vs 160 was the transformer. If I could use a 500 head on Shure or Sennheiser transmitters I would in a heartbeat. You would know this better than I but to get it to sound like the wired wouldn’t you need to have the transformer in the head?

As a for parts mic, without interior pictures, it's worth half that, at best. Someone's workin hard to make that dollar, based on that ad copy =P There's one for $425 on reverb that doesn't claim to be broken Regards Jon

Agreed. There was an operational one that sold during Xmas (with a small ding in the basket, but otherwise fine, according to the seller) for €254 ≈ $250. www.ebay.com/itm/235351383473

Easy. AEA R92 Made for small spaces and close mic placement if needed. Came here to suggest this. R92 is super cool on vocals as well as many other things and I've never had a problem with it in small spaces. It is also designed to take higher SPL and doesn't have as huge of a proximity effect if you are close miking a vocal. I have a pair of M160s that others have suggest as well and like them alot, but they are a bit vanilla compared to the AEAs, IMO.

Maybe an m160 given its polar pattern? The M160 is kind of a “de-room-ifier”. But, maybe not a great choice for a vocal mic. (On almost any another source it is fantastic, though!) It's fairly well documented that that is the vocal mic on a lot of Sturgill Simpson recordings, since they tracked full band and wanted the rejection. Is it generally not considered a vocal mic? Sounds damn good on him, but I suppose so would two cans and a string with pipes like that, eh?
