LAGUNA-4 provides both Transformer and Transformerless outputs which can be used simultaneously…print both outputs and choose later once the mix gets fleshed out. You just can't go wrong… Sounds badass! …wanna send me one?😬 Yes, I would LOVE to send a LAGUNA to everyone! 😊

As a graduate of the US public education system, I am seriously English challenged. I constantly wrestle with whether “simultaneously” or “at the same time” will communicate the better understanding. coeval, coincident, contemporaneous, contemporary, and synchronous. - - So pretentious!!!’ Maybe the final analysis should just be “bad ass” recording 🙂

I have been thinking about this as I dip my toe back into making music, and also pondering a year long thread on pres at the purple place, and I’ve drifted into that camp that, given the same source, mic and room have much more of an effect on the sound.
If I want focus on mids and that “bite”, I could grab an API-type, if I want low mids and a bit less transient detail, Neve-type. But assuming reasonably clean gain, the choice of mic and placement, and even performance, have way more influence on the overall aspects of the sound (SM7B vs a Serrano 87 for example) than any preamp, transformer or transformer-less, that I’ve used. The most color I’ve gotten was from a UA 610 Solo, to the point that it wasn’t my first choice.

Partly why I'm re-experinenting with my Soyuz Launcher. (Supposed to emulate Vintage 70's Tranny style Console) And learned even on my Budget Pre's... The smoother the better with it!
Otherwise the Launcher can veer, from more "Present". To a harsh/somewhat unnatural influence. Chris

In the 1970s, everybody was trying to get away from transformers as much as possible. That continued until digital made them attractive again. Out of curiosity, is there any particular gear from the 1970s without transformers that is still currently coveted (or still was during peak of analog tape at end of 80s and into the 90s)? My feeling is much of that gear was based on some of the first commercial IC opamps that in hindsight had all sorts of issues from an audio standpoint (insufficient slew-rates, etc.). -Chris

If Sontec truly transformersless (UPDATE: the MEP250C is, just found some pictures of the PCB), it definitely fits the bill of still being "coveted": reverb.com/item/69309107-sontec-mep-250c-1975-blackI assume GML might also fit the description but I guess that started more in the 80s EDIT: Millennia Media apparently started in the early 1990s. To clarify, I am totally on board with there being many really great transformerless preamps/gear out there, just was not aware of still sought-after units designed in 1970s.

Had an interesting thing today with a basics session. Took a DI for the bass, just doing cue tracks for a drummer to cut keepers. Acme Motown DI into a Millennia. The bass was a Hofner, and it put out some MASSIVE sub, which I think I'll need to tame when I cut the 'real' bass, so I reckon one of the Neves will be the better fit. This has happened before with bass DI: the LF extension on the Millenia mic amps is just too much for some subby instruments.
