Been watching that thread, but I think my head would explode if I paid for something like cowboy did and couldn't even get an email 6 months later, yikes. If I knew for sure it was say.. 2 months, even 3 months, but it was a done deal and a sure thing, perhaps I could handle that. My thoughts too. This is the communication age. No communication, no sale.

I love my super beast well worth the wait.
Back on topic... anyone build one or have one? Elements that is!

Thanks monkeyxx. The idea of a viable LA3 comp around $300 sure is enticing, but my sites are set on getting a better converter before that. Besides, I'm just getting my head wrapped around the WA76, and I like it a lot so far, so I'll need to spend more time with it before knowing if I already have enough or if something like the Hairball LA3 would get me there faster. I'd love to see a real deal 1073 at these prices. Did I miss something? What is this LA3(a, I assume) comp for $300?

I love my super beast well worth the wait. Back on topic... anyone build one or have one? Elements that is! Yes, building a Gold right now. Not many parts so quite an easy build. I just got stuck because a couple resistors were missing, otherwise I guess it's a 2-2,5 hour build, faster the second time of course. I'm planning a shootout of preamps in 3-4 weeks. For clean I'll be comparing Hardy M-1, DAV and this one. I'll post my findings and perhaps some clips.

I believe it is a pre based off the amplifier in the LA3a, then they tweaked it to give the same midrange thickening that the comp provides. All the sonic signature of a LA3a without the compression. my understanding.

Sorry, I might have been way off with the msrp, someone mentioned earlier one of the pieces would be around $300, and I mistakenly assumed the LA3ish piece was priced the same way.

It's not an la3a, a lot of people will run tracks through the 3a just to get the transformer/circuit color, it's really quite nice, that's what the new hairball is doing IMU, it's not a compressor

Any chance of getting a forssell smp 500 into that shootout? I love my super beast well worth the wait. Back on topic... anyone build one or have one? Elements that is! No distributor here and I don't know anyone who owns it so unless you can get a demo unit over here, that's probably going to be hard. For the clean pre's I'll probably only record acoustic guit in my not so stellar iso booth. The musician (very consistent) and instrument will be superb though and I'll probably use a good Neumann KM56, so for me it'll be very interesting with only these three contenders. But not at all as demanding as stereo micing an orchestra or choir in a concert hall, which would probably call for some Forsell, Milennia, Gordon, Pueblo etc etc
