is there anything more of a bummer than buying tracking headphones? hell, even buying mic stands or cables is more fun cuz i at least get to use them myself.

Yes, not exciting but hey should make your life easier by avoiding bleed into the mic(s), etc.

To me, buying speakers and cables aren't sexy in any way. Both are absolutely necessary but I hate spending money on them. Patch bays are another one of "those" things. Even buying guitar strings is more fun than that. I'm a guitar nerd. I love light reflecting of a brand new set of strings. It makes me happy.

Huh, I’m kind of excited about the 3’ foot instrument cable I just bought so my pedals can sit right next to me in the listening position. 🤓
And just today I was thinking it might be handy to get a couple quick release mounts for mic clips like they have at the big place I work.

I bought a pair of heavy-duty mic stands after knocking over my R84 last week. That’s not going to happen again!
I’m looking into getting a Cranborne CAST system to route some audio down from upstairs to where my piano is. It’ll save me a few minutes of running cables. Not thrilling but nice.

If you mean monitors, I always find new ones fun - I imagine most of us tend to buy nicer than our old ones? If you mean speaker cabs for amps, those are totally fun for me - see what works with what setup/amp/mics/etc

Forget the fact that as a next level geek even the boring stuff excites me, for instance I found a different heat shrink lable printer that not only takes larger heat shrink but will also do graphics and I find that as exciting as a new mic. From my days as a gearpimp I learned that it wasn’t high dollar cool gear sales that payed the bar bill it was all the boring stuff that had nice margins. Was it the economist in me that learned to geek out on the infrastructure because of the margin? Or was it the old road warrior that wanted nice organized racks and stands that didn’t droop?

Superlux HD665 Nothing expensive or fancy. Just needed something better than the bullshit isolation cans Vic fifth sell. Comparable options are twice the price at least. Isolation is critical for my spot.

Cabling/interconnect/patchbays - tens of thousands but necessary.
I love buying good tracking headphones...anything have the artist hear the magic and help the process along!

based on another recommendation, I bought some of these microfiber dusting gloves -- www.amazon.com/dp/B08NX4KRNYnow, that's pretty unexciting, although I do find them nice for handling mics (or cymbals) that I don't want to leave fingerprints on. That, and they do the dusting thing of small things around the studio pretty well too.

Yeah, about to pick up a DB25 cable. Whoopee! Cheers, Geoff Sad I know, but I get really excited about cable purchases. I’m not sure if it’s a rubber fettish but ordering and receiving new quality cables is as fun as a new comp or EQ for me. I bought 4 Vovox and 2 Evidence Audio solid core cables (not cheap!) and it was definitely very exciting! So sorry Geoff you DB 25 doesn’t count as a non exciting purchase Actually thinking about it, I obviously have a low threshold for getting excited about new stuff, ordering and receiving anything for my studio or music room is exciting - even labels. I’m just a 60 years big kid I guess.

Pretty much any time I need to order something from DigiKey or Mouser...never have the capacitor or resistor no matter how many you've bought you never have the one you need.
Guitar cases and gig bags aren't fun.

I need to disagree with people who say buying cases isn't fun. I like knowing my gear is handled and protected.

I guess because my guitars don’t often go anywhere it’s not a fun purchase Now, I just spent $1000 on a rack to power some Neve modules and that’s a tough one to swallow, but better than $3500 for an AMS one…

A chair that is comfortable and offers great back support is not exactly fun to purchase, but a bad chair can eventually make life painful.

I need to disagree with people who say buying cases isn't fun. I like knowing my gear is handled and protected. I think if your gear lives in one location cases are boring but if it moves you appreciate the magic of case design. Road warriors understand that cases are cheap insurance, they need to pack well in the truck. It was fun, spec’ing cases for some strange applications, as well as learning to appreciate the thought that went into such things as the Clair brothers “ clam shell” dual amp racks, or the pair of used Star Case 13 space racks I had where the lids could not only be used as a stand but where designed to clamp together when not in use, 13 space so with a rack mount power strip you still had an even number of useable space. None of this is rocket surgery, just inventive application of common knowledge.
