Hey Folks, And now something I can finally reveal. That is, my initial idea with the MG32 and MG33 was making a drum set mics. Hence the MG33 (side addressed is something which especially suitable and useful for toms, etc.) together with small footprint of the mics for tight spaces. Another important consideration was the fact the mics can take the drummers hits. Obviously, the smaller the mic the more rigid it is (besides the obvious fact the smaller is something the harder to hit it, right?))), so the rigidity was one of the main objectives. If you look at the capsule holder shape you can see it is curved, which adds more material for the same reason—to ensure rigidity, but without sacrificing acoustical properties. That is, there are quite a few great mics, which sounds great on drums, but cannot take hits, or just way too expensive (indeed, one would think many times before putting a $1995.00 DPA 4011 on a snare and then get stressed for entire session over drummer accidentally hitting it). Another direction—there are a few, specifically designed to take hits, but sacrifice the sound quality. We wanted to make these to excel in both, so the microphones rigidity was an important designing point. Another concern was if it can take the SPL needed without clipping. So finally, we got first response and sound files of testing it on snare and floor tom. Michael Greene of coolest Funk Studios in Salt Lake City www.funkstudiosutah.com (publishing with Michael’s permission): Mark, Well, the good news is the MG33 didn't seem to distort at all on snare or floor tom. I was hitting it as hard as I possibly could and it didn't seem to break up at all. The signal chain was MG33 at the various positions noted in the samples. Into API512 Mic Pre with Pad into Pro-Tools. They sound really great on snare and floor tom. To my ears very open and full range with no distortion. A pleasant and punchy tone. As expected, there is a noticeable proximity effect when you move the mic very close to the drum which can be used to an engineer's advantage. Want more low-end on your snare? Move the mic closer. It can take it… These are incredibly promising. They really do sound great and can take the level just fine as long as you use them with a mic pre that has a pad.

Hooked it up and it sounds really, really great. In fact, it's very similar sounding to my Soyuz Fet. I think the 013 is a little hyped on top and bottom in comparison. You can make them sound almost indistinguishable. But - I would say the Samar seems cleaner - or handles transients a little better. I'm gonna come with a bigger review and clips once I get some time.

Why not just show a drummer whacking it with some double-butt end drum sticks? I would think, in comparison to smooth (but heavy) tire weight, the stick whack would be very different velocity and just overall more accurate response to answer the question at hand (which I've never posed, but am always interested in such things as drums are my favorite instrument to record.) Anyhow, just to restate, really hope you'll make a transformer coupled version of a side address SDC (or medium diaphragm condenser) mic. I'll buy 4 without hearing any samples or tests!

Ah the DR is in fact showing off his engineering skills, while inadvertently showing the mic can survive one of the perils of touring, getting run over by the truck. Yes, it may seam overkill but I’ll put it this simply; you me and everyone here good for a possible handful each, Clair Global if guys like them a couple of hundred, then if they gain rider traction thousands to all the regionals. May not be Mark’s intention, but I have already told a couple of live guys who do a bunch of what we will call the “anti Hudsonic” close mic a ln orchestra to take a look at the side address version.

Well... the Shure made some time ago the video dropping the SM57 off the helicopter, so I had an idea of making some kind of show. Since I don't have any pilot friends (I was even considering something like F-15) I just decided to go easy direction. Guess what? Today I got a flat tire on that very wheel--a huge screw stuck in it across front and side. I thought that was quite symbolic... is it karma, or what? Ah, don't go the way of the silly stuff! I remember some ad of Chuck Ainlay (?IIRC) water skiing with some company's preamp in hand. I thought it was so out of touch in its attempt at eye-catching marketing, and above all, pointless. Not saying your video was pointless, just saying Occam's razor man! Karma is only applicable if you go with the adage that 'no good deed goes unpunished.' Sorry to hear about the tire. I'm also down a spare tire for another 3 weeks as Costco is wayyy backed up. Would also love to see that video w/ e22s, but my budget is spent this year, so, you know, sending that hope towards you incorporating your badass toroidal's into a side-address this upcoming year!

Finally got a chance to play around with this M32 a little more. So, it's definitely less scooped than my Soyuz 013 FET. I always judge a mic/capsule by what happens when you EQ it...For instance, something cheaper (I won't say names, but if you guessed you would be warm) kind of falls apart when you start digging out bottom end. Some mics seem to cleverly cover up the strident upper mids and you don't hear them until you start cutting frequencies. Or you just can't get the boominess out without leaving harshness. Then you go down the rabbit hole of taking out the boom, then cutting the harshness and on and on... Well, this mics ain't that. Just beautiful mids. Also - when a capsule is really well done, it seems like the slightest changes can really shape a tone. Just from memory of the 84s I've owned, the 32 seems like it might be a little shinier on top. But where this thing shines is the "middle mids." The 400hz to 2kHz just seems to really capture so well. If you have to dig bottom out, you're not left with this painful 3-8kHz. (Try that with a Blue Spark) I was also impressed by its off axis response...the pattern seems pretty huge. In fact, I sang this vocal bending over to sing into the acoustic setup from probably 3-4 feet away. So this is just a quick recording to give you an idea. I pulled out about -3db at 590Hz, but it's flat everywhere else. Have a little Valhalla Room on it to make it not dead mono. Like I said, I just sand into the mic as it was positioned for the vocal. One pass, no tuning so don't make fun of the effort. I EQ'd the vocal - dug out some bottom and mids. Let me know if there are any quick things you want me to try with it. I might take it to a session on the 7th and have some real players play on it... I get what you are saying, but none of the holy grail mics were designed/ voiced for vocals, great mics just work. SDC’s get a bad rap as vocal mics, until you use them for vocals. Remember there is a version of the KM84 with a wind screen. Almost all of the well regarded Stage condensers are SDC. Of course as usual you got an excellent tone.
