Replica Mic makes the capsule. Never heard of it.

Replica Mic makes the capsule. Never heard of it. My gut tells me “ makes” means import from China, but we shall see.

Hard to “steal” something that’s open source. Choose to profit from it, not the coolest, but commerce is never “cool”.

I agree: an interesting moral distinction, but if you know, you are using somebody else's ideas and design to create a business model/product and taking business away (possibly) from the originator, that takes a certain , ah, fluidity, of ethics ?

John for that price get yourself a Universal Audio SP-1. We just auditioned some beside some real KM84s and everyone was impressed especially for that money.

Hard to “steal” something that’s open source. Choose to profit from it, not the coolest, but commerce is never “cool”. IIRC, it was not just a matter of these guys profiting from someone else's hard work - they also failed to attribute that work or make it clear that the stuff was open source from somewhere else and not original work by Mic & Mod. Profit may be frowned upon, but failing to provide credit, etc. is a cardinal sin in Open Source land...

Very interesting as the UA sp1 came up. I was just looking at a pair of sdc’s, and was looking at ua too. Ive been glancing at mic and mod before, but never had my hands on any of their mics. Then i came across some chats about the UA sd1 (same series as the sdc’s but a sm7b clone) that looks from everything to be a generic cheap off mic that t bone sells for 90 bucks. Cannot comment on it deeper, but that kind of turned me off regarding the sp1’s when i could not find anywhere what their origin is. Anyone have more intel on that? In that light the micmods might not be too bad to look at…

My guess is these are made in China. Probably similar to the Mic Parts kits. Still, buy one of the kits and then your own transformer, tube, and capsule, particularly for their LDCs, and you could build something very nice.
If you’re looking at the 84s, I would just get one or a pair of the Serrano’s. They sounded so good when I had them in here.
Most of the cloner’s and replica builders we love owe a lot to DIY open source forums. So I wouldn’t stress about that.

That's a hard pass from me There are so many reasonable priced undiscovered used SDC’s out there that chasing a budget Chinese 84 just doesn’t make sense.

Aren’t these the guys who “stole”, a lot of the group diy guys’ build ideas ? Show me a clone company that didn't do that to some degree.. And yes, it was all open source, but still. That's what happened.

And besides, the circuit was always simple to clone. It's been the capsule that's been hard to clone and the off-axis sound that makes the KM84 stand out is impossible to replicate without the capsule.

It's been the capsule that's been hard to clone and the off-axis sound that makes the KM84 stand out is impossible to replicate without the capsule. Absolutely. If you don't take the off axis sound into account, the Oktava MK-012 is a near perfect match (sound-wise) for a KM84. It's when you get off axis that they start sounding different. I know Bill did testing on this and I spent a day doing my own tests with various SDCs. The KM84 and Oktava MK-012 are equals on acoustic guitar at the NBJ, 8" out. I thought they were so close (could not hear a difference in A/B tests) that I gave back the KM84's I had on long-term loan. But... there are other great SDC's that don't sound the same but are great anyway... MC930
