The live albums I'm recording are preamps from the A&H Avantis and if tracking, will use the SSL B6, which is the interface. Plenty of color available after the fact. The only thing I really miss is the extra punch of the Daking pres I had.

I did some recording recently with my Carbon preamps. They are really nice. They have a really good low end reach and neutral top end, and worked really well on Emily’s voice. DAD pre's are no joke either.

Yes but I use the Grace M108 or Merging's HAPI/Horus. None of those are slouches in the mic pre or AD/DA department. Wow! I had to look up the Merging -- cool stuff! You've got some nice interfaces there, BD!

El cheapo time here... 58>Soyuz Launcher>UA Volt Vintage Button. On this super brief "one take" vocal clip. In gorgeous 16/44.1 Thicker result via Launcher. But still trying to judge when it's TOO assertive. Chris P.S. Anyone else wanna share specific clips? (I find actual audio examples helpful BTW)

You've got some nice interfaces there, BD! they are very nice. If you don't need the I/O count the Anubis is excellent and the budget version is the Neumann MT48 which is the same as an Anubis pro but has different interface options(thunderbolt vs RJ45)

Last year i recorded a school band over a few weeks and used the mackie onyx pres - the track that stood out most had a pretty good singer and a modest U67. The preamp didn't ruin it.

Didn't the Onyx finish in the Top 5, a couple of times... In Lynn Fuston's 3D blind listening tests? Chris

I don't know, Chris - but the Onyx 800R 8ch ADAT pre is still doing it's job here amongst two dozend of showy preamps. Nowadys i use it's analoge out on 8ch SubD, but the digital side never was a problem. A friend has got the Mackie Blackbird interface that is dead cheap and seems to have the same preamps, but without individual 48v switches and such. It can be configured to being an ADAT pre, the drivers haven't been updated for a long time but as an ADAT pre it just works. You can find it used for around 100$ - nice for 8 decent channels if you ask me.
EDIT: here's one of the songs of the school band - tracked live without gobos, but the choir as overdub. All Onyx pres, on the intro you hear a MD441 on the acoustic guitar with a little hiss, showing one of the limits of the preamp. Main vocalist is 16.

Yah know the amount of times I use the pres on my Discrete 8 which sits directly above my Neve & JLM pres....... more often than I should.... For vocals my 'always setup' setup is U47(ef12 clone) -> 1072 -> 1176. The rest is lucky dip.
The most important part is the performance so just don't keep anything around that sounds bad. Antelope pres are pretty good, drivers not so much.
