For those who have an extra 35k$ Toni Fishman, founder and CEO of microphone designer/manufacturer TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik, has launched a new company, Fairchild Recording Equipment LLC. After five years of extensive R&D and precision testing, the authentic recreation of the legendary Fairchild 670 vacuum tube compressor is now available in very limited numbers. fairchildusa.com/

Why would one need to do "five years of extensive R&D and precision testing" if it is an authentic recreation ?

Why would one need to do "five years of extensive R&D and precision testing" if it is an authentic recreation ? Well I’m sure they will tell you that they “ painstakingly duplicated the transformer, had to source the perfect resistors and capacitors. Then there is sourcing the tubes….” 5 years to develop and 5 hours to generate copy. Let’s just hope we don’t learn it’s a rebadged low dollar clone.

I just moved to TN. from CT. but was located only 5 miles from "Lime Rock Park" and would see Tony, and the crew all the time. He had their Porsche, and I had my Ferrari. Lots of fun racing around the track, with NO FLASHING LIGHT BEHIND YOU! Haha
Good times, but that was a few years ago. Haven't seen him, or the team for a while?

Price is just surprising, I said as much on GearSpace. I could put 8 channels of Anamod 660's in the 500 slots of my API Box console, buy an Unfairchild, and two of the new Chandler RS660's and still have enough money left over to buy a nice mic. This definitely isn't a "for the people" moment, it's to make a point and get a few $$ out of Blackbird and Abbey Road.

I don't even particularly like the Fairchild 670. Therefore my list of things I could spend $35K on is very long

You would really need to be working with clients that know what it is. Otherwise, it's a monstrous waste of money. Just like the UA clones, marketed as the originals, it's a massive scam. Just my opinion.

But how is it actually worth $35 grand, its not an original somehow in pristine condition ?

A few years ago, I spoke to a man who builds 1:1 brand new creations of the Fairchild 670. Apparently, an exact replica.
His price was around $7000. As I pressed him, he recommended being ready to spend the necessary money ($1,700 or More?) every year or two to replace all of the 6386 Tubes in the unit. He said this circuit burns through those tubes fairly quickly, but dependent upon use. That is not something I could ever justify (let alone the initial price to get into one).

Tell me about it Chad, I just dropped $2000 for new matched tubes for my POM Fairchild 670 MkII. That’s an UNSEXY way to spend 2 grand.

Yes, but if you only turn it on when you are actually using it then you can get a lot of life out of the tubes. I was worried about the future costs, and Pierre told me he has had some users get 10 years out of a set of tubes. I turn my POM 670 MKII off as much as possible.

Sidebar, your honor . . .
Judge, may it please the court, I'd like you to advise everyone here with a Retro, V-Comp, Manley or other unit that uses 6386 tubes, to get some spares cos this replacing tubes in all these 660/670s is going to put a strain on supply!

Yes, I’m getting a spare set because I’m worried about supply in the future. My unit is working great right now but I have been through two spare tubes in the past 3-4 years of use.

I suspect all of us who used them back when they were new are rolling our eyes because they ate tubes every three or four months!

Mine has been running on them for 10 years. I’ve had it longer. The lifetime guarantee and POM’s friendship is invaluable.

They should have a banner ad for these various fora and sites pictures in background... Headline: A LEGEND CAN LAST A LIFETIME Byline: (and the tubes last 10 years or more) It writes itself. Pass it on.

I bought two of these to get chicks in LA. Unfortunately when they realized it wasn’t a boat I was SOL. Trying to return them now.
