How often do you think about Marinair transformers?

I can only go about 3 seconds before my mind switches to marinara sauce. Delicious

I don't know man. Something about the old iron...I don't want it to be true, but it is. Couldn't agree more. I have a pair of old St Ives wired up into a little passive box that seem to always improve whatever passes thru them.

Only when I plug in my one of my <<snip>> one of my.......Eisen LilPEQr EQ's. Love those. They have a beautifully elegant grainy air on the HF while still being wonderfully warm. I lucked out at the very end with #63 and #64 of only 64 made -- with Marinairs from a vintage 80 series.

Never, my vintage Neves sounded no better than my original handmade Heritage.

When it matters. And to me it 100% matters in my vintage 1073s. I had to cycle through units for years until I found a vintage pair with Marinairs. The problem is so many people have butchered vintage units over the years. It’s a game of inches if you even care, but if you do nothing beats a good vintage 1073/1084.

You have no idea how many times I have considered buying 8ch of Heritage strips, swapping the iron and getting a real PSU!

Hey Bill I think it’s one of those things that’s really easy to ignore until you have a bunch, compare them to a modern Neve transformer and then you realize yeah their is a difference.

Looking at my search history, there is still more searches for porn than Marinair, so I think I’m still on the sane side of humanity.
Seriously. They cross my mind from time to time, but since I had my BAEs I honestly really don’t even think about having or hunting for a marinair loaded 73.

Not since I built my 1272's with them and realized that they sounded no different than carnhill or any others really.

They're fairly low ratio so less obvious differences from anything else. Higher ratio tube transformers, much more obvious.

Quite often, but not for the reason you might have in mind.
Specifically I think of yellow label Marinairs, because someone knowledgeable about these things once dropped this “fact” on me that the labels were actually originally white, and only became yellow from nicotine exposure.
I’m not sure that actually true haha but even if spurious it highlighted to me how much of my old gear and instruments look the way they do because they were simply drowned in cig smoke constantly. New gear will never develop the same patina.

Brings me back to the joyful days of chain smoking cigarettes and drinking strong bitter coffee in control rooms, writing up charts of backing vocals and then being too hoarse to sing them.

I don't think about them that much, but I will say that I've never heard any clone that sounds like the old original 1066s that I used to have access to. Those did sound different than anything modern I've heard.

I found Marinairs trannies inside my Neumann OEV eq rack. Marinair instead of the expected Hauffe trannies. Pretty disappointing, and I can't get refunded, because blablabla. I've been thinking about this a lot lately sadly.
I was chasing a specific sound, and now I'm stuck with the frankenstein thing.
Always ask inside pics for the vintage gear.
