Bravo! My favorite genre to record. Space in arrangements is a lovely thing when you have a powerful song to sing. Example: Beautiful acoustic sound. Present, yet warm. Mic?

Plus we haven't hit any good Banjo jokes yet. Q: What is the difference between a banjo and a chainsaw? A: You can sort of tune a chainsaw. (via a trumpet- and banjo-playing friend) Q. What's the definition of a banjo? A. Kindling for an accordion fire.

Originally Americana was Country music that didn't fit within the confines (perfect word) of corporate Nashville labels and radio. Since then the term has broadened to include folk, blues etc.

You forgot EDM.
If the CB Radio craze ever comes back, you could even get... Hamericana.
Anyone think of going to the Nashville Americanafest? Chris

Enjoying this thread... but, I'm more confused than when I started. I thought Chris Stapleton was country? Lynyrd Skynyrd isn't southern rock?
One thing is that I used to get frustrated when people called my music Americana because to me it conjured images of, like, pastoral setting or something. John Denver or I don't know what. Sounds like there's plenty of stuff that's a bit more ragged that would be included in this mysterious "genre".
What about a band like Hiss Golden Messenger? To me I thought they were Indie Folk but is Indie Folk just Americana?

The Ozark Mountain Daredevils are my exhibit A of “Americana” if there has to be one. I hate all the genre calling and pigeon holing. When someone asks me what “kind” of music I play I usually respond “good I hope”. Whatever happened to just playing music and it not having to be “something”? /rant.

In a traditional sense, I would say guys like Dylan started it. Speaking in modern terms, I would put guys like Jason Isbell in the front of the line. Lots of artists that swing a little more country, but don’t want to be lumped into modern pop county or folk rock, are starting to identify more with the Americana crowd. Just my opinion, genera labeling tends to set some people off these days so I avoid it when I can… When I have groups coming in identifying as Americana, I usually get excited. They usually are heavily into the Dave Cobb crowd, and it means I can be more minimal and push my gear harder without anyone bitching about distortion or something not being bright enough. My expectations are that song arrangements will be sparser, I don’t have to make everything else sound small to accommodate drums (they’ll let me get away with 4 mics on a drum set), I can use my ribbon mics without fear of noise complaints. That’s where my mind goes with Americana. Most see themselves more as storytellers than songwriters, which is a big consideration and mindset when producing this stuff and deciding what’s important. Bravo! My favorite genre to record. Space in arrangements is a lovely thing when you have a powerful song to sing. Example: This is a amazing. Reminds me of the Common Linnets. And that is a good thing.

I think of everything from Jackson Browne, Gillian Welch, Avett Brothers to Punch Brothers, Little Feat, etc. So maybe it's meaningless. All I'd maybe say is that no one from outside North America can do it? Like they can make fun of it, the way the Stones kind of lovingly poke fun at country/folk stuff. But they can't do it sincerely. The Common Linnets up there are from the Netherlands. I think they hold their own with anyone from “America”.

But they can't do it sincerely. Americana started not so much as a genre but as an industry chart for selling country(ish) music that couldn't find its way on Nashville pop radio. So yeah in retrospect tons of music could be labeled Americana--The Band, Poco, Flying Burrito Bros etc.. But originally the term was devised to give folks like Steve Earle and Nancy Griffith a place in the music industry. I'm not picking a fight, but regarding the Stones not doing country sincerely I'd have to disagree. I wish Nashville sounded this "authentic" today. P.S. Bill and Charlie at their best IMHO

I just played Dead Flowers in a set the other night. If I want to have a chance at any decent paid gigs by myself, I have to start playing more covers than originals. Might as well be stuff that makes me happy.
