I hope this will be helpful for anyone trying to narrow down a certain vocal compressor they may want to pursue. I pulled just the vocal sections out of all my reviews and put them in a playlist so you can cycle through and compare more quickly. Anyway...hopefully it will save someone some time and money! www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLUZ1qLFHNr5DKlwJWrENDsWHKp0CrgXbv

It’s always hard not to buy a used Bluey, everytime i see one ! There's nothing else quite like it. It is very different from a standard Rev A clone.

Curious, for me the Chandler and Highland have more texture/girth, in a good way ?
Do you keep that quality in the mix or so you find say an edgier sound, like the bluey cuts through better or would this be singer/song dependent and when multiple different comps is ideal?
If you were buying one: which one?

I have a Retro STA Level and a Millennia tube opto - the Retro STA Level being my favourite of those two for my vocals. But after reading about people raving on GS about the Thermionic Phoenix as a tracking comp when I got my Thermionic Phoenix Mastering Plus (for stereo bus duties) I had a go using it as a vocal and bass compressor and boy oh boy, wow it really is very smooth and gorgeous, more refined than the STA Level but a lovely euphoric sound and it can be driven into to add some hair - it a very stunning tracking compressor (to my pleasant surprise) Have you tried one at all?

If you were buying one: which one? I think it depends on your vocal chain a bit. If you have a real thick chain like a 47 style mic into a tube preamp then the RS124/BG1/Sta Level may be too much of a good thing. The Bluey is balls to the wall. The wet/dry blend helps a bit but it's going to imprint a significant color on the source no matter what. Most of the time that's a great thing but for that reason, I'd never want to use it for tracking a vocal or for it to be my only outboard comp come mix time. If you like 1176 style comps I think the Stam ADG is the top overall choice for flexibility and when the sound(particularly Rev A) is right for the vocal, I've had it beat out the Retro's, Chandler's etc... on certain mixes. I need to shoot a video of it and get it added to this playlist. The Bluey is an awesome tool to have if you already have an outboard comp or two you like.

Fantastic videos Josh. How are you feeling?
I love that my ears are consistent. They were all good, I found the Chandler the most natural, but the Retro 176 does a thing I just love. I recently used a CL1b and found that to be an incredibly effective tool for taming a vocal an adding just the right amount of fullness. I liked it better than the LA2A, which was also available in the studio I was in.
Here's similar shootout. It might help clarify things a bit.

A little better each week, I can tell this is going to take several months so I'm just trying not to stress over it anymore. I do what I can and am trying not to worry about what I can't do at this point. Thanks for asking! That's a great shootout, thanks for posting it, I hadn't seen it in a while. I need to give the CL1B another run at some point. I recently listened back to some stuff I had tracked through it and really liked the sound.

If that doesn't sell a TON of Chandler RS124 units, then nothing will and y'all need new hearing aids. LOL Seriously, spock, AdamF, that thing is the TITS. And I absolutely love the AS 76D as well. I'm totally rethinking 76a choice on male lead vocal now. The D has a great bit of punch on lead vocals. I always prefer two comps on vocals when TRACKING... yes, I'm cray cray. usually an Opt or V-Comp or CL1b into a 1176 AB revision but I am WOWed by listening to the RS124. Bloody hell, it's just astounding in a totally different way. I have a boatload of comps here, and always tend to go V-Comp or CL1b or an OPTO just grazing the peaks and riding the waves and then the 76 to catch the big kahunas. Today ia good day. I have learned something.
