Whuddya think of the BLA? That's the $300 stereo interface box yeah? ... FWIW my main box is a Motu 16A and, once everything is level matched? I can't honestly really tell the difference between a live mix off the SSL XL desk and a captured playback. How much "better" can converters get? My response mirrors what you said. I can't "really" hear a difference between the Orion Studio, the BLA and the MOTU Ultralight AVB I have hooked up right now. It is a spare interface from our track rig at church. BLA is just stereo so I can't process through the 500 rack. After 7 years, I am having my first bad support moment from Antelope. I ordered a power supply and haven't received it. So... MOTU it is. Maybe if I was able to quickly A/B I'd hear differences more easily but honestly, If I can't hear a difference otherwise with my monitoring change, it has to be pretty small in comparison. I ask on this topic of older pieces with the thought of something with a lot of outputs for interfacing with the 500 rack better and patch bay. I had run across a couple of deals on Aurora's which got me curious.

Rob, if Ultralite is interface and you need converters for outboard, you might look at Ferrofish. They have various options for ADAT, MADI, Dante. Don't recall AVB, but I think something would work. I know the converters aren't bragged about in the same breath as some of these discussed, but I've heard of studios really liking them and the performance. Pretty affordable way to get up the count for more AUX processing.

I ask on this topic of older pieces with the thought of something with a lot of outputs for interfacing with the 500 rack better and patch bay. I had run across a couple of deals on Aurora's which got me curious. I feel that. t seems crazy to me that for all the interfaces with lightpipe I/O there really aren't any "new" options for 8 channel expansion that don't have mic amps & other fluff attached. Where are all the straight up 8 channel line boxes? One's that aren't $3k each anyway? And for that matter, where's all the stereo boxes with SPIDF ?! If you need more outs & find a good deal on an old Apogee or Lucid Tech box sure, why not? The only really downside is that if something goes wrong its an unfixable boat anchor. The one thing I wouldn't do is build a whole new rig around something that old. And at this point I feel like if I get several years out of an interface/converter set then I got my moneys worth... anything else is bonus time. Went though that a few years ago with my old rig, which was PCI based and the converters themselves were fine... it was everything AROUND those boxes that started to fail. Computer stuff mainly. Video card goes bad. RAM fails. Main PC went down then the backup machine gets funky... The core of the rig was from 2005?! At a certain point realized I had to either double down on old tech & start to stockpile parts... or just cut ties & build a new modern rig. Wasn't much of a debate, plan B won easily. Like it or lump it audio production is a technology driven business. Gotta stay current, unless your on some other plan.
