I heard Stapleton was good but didn’t see it. Cheers, Geoff He was indeed. I’m sure you can catch it on YouTube at some point. The halftime show was… not to my taste. Dre and Snoop were great last year. This was a disappointment imo. I think Harry Styles could do a good job honestly. |

That was some very odd choreography. In the middle of the scene, the one sperm seemed to leap forward toward the ovum, but was unable to penetrate! |

It was a medley of her hits. I know three of them. It was a lip sync, and not that diligent either. The set and stage was interesting, many platforms high in the air. It looked to me at times like some Chinese or Korean arena dance routine. There may have been two hundred dancers out there. She looked pregnant, or heavy. It went over well. Ever since The Weekend, I'm just glad to not be appalled at a half time show. Thought her vocal was slightly undermixed, but ok.
Game was great!

It was exactly what I expected from Rihanna. She sang here and there through autotune live to tracks full of her own background vocals and a ton of doubles, making it easy for her to not sing if she didn't want to. The choreography was very interesting and props to the dancers on those elevated and continually moving platforms. Rihanna is fun, dance in the club kind of music. It is either your thing or it is not.
On another note, Chris Stapleton's emotional "National Anthem" was a real highlight. I enjoyed seeing BabyFace out there, although he was a touch pitchy, but props to not using Autotune. Sheryl Lee Ralph performed an impassioned "Lift Every Voice and Sing," but it wasn't a great key for her, and lyrics in all the low parts got lost. Then again, they may have just worked around that high A as her money note and let the rest go. |

The problem with the 1/2 time show is you just can’t judge it as a musical performance, Stapleton worked because it fit perfectly with the Super Bowl rule of 2 live feeds vocal and guitar.
Drinking a couple of weeks ago with a friend who is a production designer and his partner who is a choreographer we were talking about the difficulties of the show and how unusual it is because the TV audience has a far more intimate experience than most in the stadium. All your visuals have to work in both contexts. Plus the whole Ariel elements that seam to now be a requirement on a stage you need to be able to set up and remove in 8min, go ask your neighborhood rigger how he feels about that. We all agreed that “concert” and “performance” were the wrong discription from all our disciplines, we would just call it The 1/2 Time Spectacular.

She was tied down, so my friends were acting like that discounts any fear. Maybe if you aren’t very smart? I’d at minimum secretly be petrified thinking the rigging would fail any second. I’m scared of heights, I think maybe that’s a downside of being intelligent, lol- but hey, I tell myself enough statistics and I can adapt to any stupid high place. Thanks Eric for reminding us the rigging guys are the real superstars

It didn't look like she was actually singing to me. At least the show didn't depend on her vocals to come off. She was "singing" even when she wasn't.

What guitar was Stapleton playing? At times, it sounded like a baritone but looked like a regular tele with a humbucker in the neck.

It was a lip sync. Sounded like vocals that were run through a bunch of plugins, processed. And, of course, the few times her vocals were going when the mic was nowhere near her mouth.
