I’ve never had anyone lobbying me for a vote. And it doesn’t require much to be a voting member…12 credits over the course of your career. Those don’t have to be major label credits…just anything that’s available digitally. And I personally don’t vote in the televised events (you only get so many votes to sped across all the categories)…I don’t have any knowledge of most pop music but feel like I can make a well opinioned vote in Americana, folk, bluegrass, roots, country, blues, best engineered record… ....and these are the things not known by anyone out in the styx in this decentralized non-organized industry! I figured they needed a big annual fee to be a member and vote....I coulda been voting for 20 years..... ....wait.....indy streaming releases never have correct credits since CDBaby never fills in the 'producer' line, even when artists submit it..... It’s a hundred dollars a year for a membership.

The televised award show is very much for entertainment purposes, but I will say that to pre-telecast awards have value for artist in smaller genres. It helps them get higher billing at the festivals, can take them from bars to clubs or clubs to concert halls, and get press opportunities that wouldn’t be available otherwise. And those awards aren’t voted on by “insiders” but by peers. Also MusicCares is an incredible resource that’s available to all working musicians with financial aid in medical emergencies, help musicians get set up with affordable health insurance, and aid in other things that often times feel impossible for musicians. And if an award show raises awareness to that and generates donations, it has value. At this point in my life, I'd rather know that MusicCares "awarded" a deserving Musician, with their help. (Although if it were a realistic option-Even "just" a Grammy nomination would be nice ) Thanks for the Pre-Telecast info, on your post too. Chris I can tell you that MusicCares has helped a lot of “low level” touring musicians with getting health care and distributed tens of thousands of grants to touring and working musicians at the beginning of COVID. They also provide a lot of education services to young kids.

No offense but I’m gonna have to give a bit of an eye roll to anybody that claims they wouldn’t like to have a Grammy with their name on it.

Given the choice of a Grammy or lots of money, I’d take the money. The only reason that I’d want a Grammy is because it probably meant I was going to make a bunch of money

Anyway, thinking of your problem.. I remembered a situation when I was trying to watch some show on TV and all I heard was room/side audio and barely ANY voices at all. Turns out that the show was broadcasting in 7.1 or something weird and my receiver didn't decode it properly. I forced it into stereo mode and it sounded normal. When I put it back, it worked OK. It's like it never received the flag to switch or something.

I've been involved with the Recording Academy for many years and also state that the sound was very roomy sounding. I also hear it in other live performance broadcasts and recordings. Do these audio engineers think it needs to have all that ambience because it is in a live performance? Someone is not doing it right.

After my group recorded a project at a local studio our engineer was given a Dove Award. We literally mounted a bar of Dove soap on a wooden base and dowel, and spray painted it metallic gold.
I'm happy to make one for anyone here if it will make you feel better. (Just be aware that it won't last long once the paint starts reacting with chemicals in the soap.)

Haven’t done the Grammy’s but I have done live broadcasts and the guy who used to live at the other end of the hall worked for a broadcast remote crew ( I just collect interesting neighbors). The heart of most of the problems with these live spectacles is this: First rule of live broadcast: keep it simple! Well they throw that one out the window don’t they? Surround and now Imersive mixes have always seamed to take priority when most consume it over stereo at best. I know have to bring that awesome new audio truck and use it, wouldn’t be surprised if what went out as 2ch was the Atmos binerial. The best mix for any broadcast has always been the simple 2ch, usually mixed in the main truck and ironically what the director is working off. They of course also throw out Eric’s first rule of life: always have a backup!

I mean maybe Svart is right - I did actually think about that because I have a Bose system downstairs (I didn’t listen to this in my studio.) I actually made sure my center channel didn’t get turned down but didn’t think about going to stereo. So maybe I didn’t hear it the way it was intended.

Ok - maybe something’s wrong with my tv/surround sound…but what in the actual **** is going on with the live sound mix. Did they put out 500 room mics and that’s all we’re hearing? I do think it’s getting better as the show is going on - but the first several acts were a complete shit show. 1. You censored yourself. Good job. Nobody wants to read that dirty ƒµ¢[< word around here. 2. The guy who was doing FOH sound prior to his horrific motorcycle accident a few years back was an ace. Who's doing it now? (Broadcast feed is taken from the stems of that)

My opinion is that it is hardly "peers' doing the voting. NARAS has opened membership to even those loosely affiliated with the music industry. In fact, many members have never released any type of record. They are online people.
NARAS now FUBU and rap oriented. WOKE and mumbling about music saving the world. Sheesh!
We did have some good Grammy power here in Chicago though. Best engineered classical for Charlie Post; Best Choral Performance for The Crossing and Donald Nally, a professor of conducting at Northwestern. Best Spoken Word Poetry (a new category) went to J. Ivey, a Chicago poet and NARAS national trustee out of CHITOWN, Attaca Quartet won for Best Chamber Music Album / Small Ensemble.
NARAS FUBU
I am an ex Recording Academy National Trustee and Vice President of the organization. I am no longer a member of NARAS.
The Grammy show did two things for the first time last Sunday nite. They showed trans ass and showed Mary J. Bilge's cooter.

you guys crack me up.. lol..
Missed the show but I did hear a little mashup on sports radio. bringing out the classic rock of rap, kinda cool. It’s weird the kids all listening to stuff from when I was in middle school. back when dudes were spinning records, that’s a skill!.
Even on sports radio it sounded like they broadcast from an iPhone mic… they must have messed up something.

Coupla things: I was listening on my TV speakers; stereo, no further processing or amplification. Probably why it sounded okay to me. I watch awards shows for the music, especially the mashups. For instance, you aren’t going to see Stevie Wonder jamming for a few minutes with Chris Stapleton at your typical festival show. I thought they just killed it. And the hip hop tribute was pretty awesome as well. I tune out the dumb comedy and acceptance speeches.

Now I’m all worried that I talked shit here and on Facebook and it was my system that was the problem. I have never commented about about how bad stuff is because…I get it…stuff is hard. I thought the other night was an exception. But maybe I wasn’t hearing it correctly - because what I heard was malpractice.
Edit: I’m not really worried and don’t give a rat’s ass.
