Bleh. I can always send it back. Or just buy a Mac Studio. Somehow I think the adapter is a bit cheaper, you just want a Mac Studio. C'mon, it's clear as day ..

Ok there is another potential fix that I found and will now test. There is a “power management” tab in the device manager and the fix is to uncheck the “allow computer to turn device off to save power” box. I am wondering if that happened during the time that the battery needed to be changed. If this works, I will return the other adapter unopened. I have just done this so we will see how long I go before getting BSOD this time. Or, I will just get a Mac Studio. . ETA: This makes sense if this ends up being the "fix". I really can't remember having the BSOD happen while I am at the computer but only seeing it if I have left it on and been away from it for a while. It will be interesting to see what happens today.

That did not work either. So, I mashed the reset button and now for shits and giggles, want see if the BSOD returns before I try the new adapter.

You might look up the problem but for Intel NUCs. All the mini computers that places like sweetwater still for audio are just rebranded Intel NUCs.

But the device manager itself tells me that it’s a Ralink driver right down to which update it is. I believe this computer is actually an Acer or ASUS but, I am willing to try what you are suggesting as well. Or, just get a Mac Studio. 😂

All the troubleshooting says the drivers are working properly. When I try to update it says I have the “best driver available”. I really thought the “power” thing mentioned earlier was gonna be the ah HA moment. As an aside, I am surprised that Sweetwater hasn’t reached back out to me as they are typically very responsive. I will email them again bc. i am curious as to what their tech folks say.
In the overall scheme of things, this isn’t a big deal but the problem is vexing and now I want to figure it out just “because”.

I considered them when I was moving to a new machine a couple years ago.

Also, have you popped the lid to see if you can remove the nic from the unit physically?
Might see if you can. Uninstall driver, then power off and remove card and reboot.

So I have changed to a USB 3 wireless adapter and disabled LAN card. I have not popped open the machine or used BIOS yet. Just want to see if the BSOD stops now.
Of course, with my wife pretty much already greenlighting an upgrade............

The computer remained stable overnight after disabling the old LAN card. We’ll see if it holds.

Disabling the LAN card seems to have done the trick. Several days now of varying powering on and off, as well as differing run times. No BSOD.

In the device manager I opened the LAN card and I clicked the disable box. I know you said I would probably have to physically remove it but so far (**hits head to knock on wood**) this has worked. I will certainly let everyone know if I have any more problems.

I'm guessing based on just being able to disable the device in Device Manager, that it's solely a driver issue and not a hardware problem. Seems that a LOT of folks have problems with RaLink devices when I search for the issue.

My household used to be all Windows/Android and I was the default SysAdmin. Since converting to all Apple, my life is much less complicated. I will never go back. This thread has been bringing back nightmares.

This thread has been bringing back nightmares. No. Svart, gwlee just spent six days, money and time to fix a problem that probably wouldn’t have even come up on a Mac. Being an engineer and computer enthusiast myself, I understand why you feel the way you do, plus the $$$ are not insignificant, but man, I love not having to do those deep dives into uSoft world. I just upgraded to an M1 Mini. 3 clicks = done. New computer completely configured exactly the way my old one was. Couldn’t be simpler. AND, no wife and kids asking me why they can’t see the network printer, etc, etc. Just sayin…
