Well due to the fact the property I'm in at the moment is being sold, I decided I had enough with the North East, as this is the second move in LESS than 2 years. I'm done. That said, my quest for a new home to set up shop begins tomorrow... I had to wait till the ICE storm passed before I get on the road! Have a few good connections in Nashville, and they have some ideas that could include me, but I will know more once I arrive, which should be Friday eve, as I'm driving. Will be staying with friends in Donelson. In the meantime, if any of you know of a building, something like a Church, Barn, Grange Hall, for sale in a good area for around 500K, let me know. (I know that's pushing it, as most I've looked at via the internet are 1 mil & more way over my head.) But who knows, maybe one of you know something held privately, not listed with a real estate? I would think that most of the Church properties that are listed at the moment with agents, I've already looked at via the internet? In a nutshell, the idea is to build a Sound Stage / Recording Room / with a pub for live performances.. (you know me and my beers) All under one roof. But if that doesn't happen, and most likely it won't as it's a very big undertaking, and I need to get to work ASAP. I'm also looking into the possibility of partnering up with an existing space if anyone has room, and is interested. Don't need a separate stinking, control room, one large nice sounding room will do~! Haha I'm easy. But then there's the question, where to live? Thanks guys Paul www.millbrooksoundstudio.com

Best of luck with it!! I'm sure you can succeed ANYWHERE and with your skills and resume, shouldn't be an issue.

It's a tough market right now...a half a million used to go a long way in Nashville but that's changed. Another area to look is Ashland City. It's a bit west of town but traffic is usually not a problem so it doesn't feel as far as it is from downtown.
I also like Gallatin...the town center really has a great vibe.
I hate to be the guy jumping on this train but would you consider Muscle Shoals, AL? Lots of exciting and new studios...lots of work and buzz there right now...and half a million would buy you a mansion.

Thanks guys for all the ideas, and replies!
I really appreciate it.
Sean, I was in Gallatin yesterday, didn't see anything that would work, but I'm here for anther week or so, and check the listings every morning & evening. Plus more friends have chimed in with properties that are NOT listed, and those are on our list to see today.
At this point, I have a few possibilities....
Supposed to have dinner with Vance Powell, his wife, and some good old friends on Wed. I'm sure there will be other options that will pop up with the more people I talk to.
I'll keep ya posted.

If you're interested in the Austin area, a lot of the "cool" scene is moving to Lockhart. Small town about 35 min from Austin previously known only for BBQ but now as an Austin music "expat" haven. A couple very popular studios there and room for more.
Just like Muscle Shoals, $500k still buys a lot. Before I moved to Georgetown, we looked at a house in Lockhart that looks like the damn governor's mansion for like $600k. Three floors. Spiral staircase. Built in like 1910. It was out of our price range but sure was tempting.
Point is, your money goes a long way down there.

I wish I could recommend the DFW area but housing prices in most of the area here are overinflated. My house has almost doubled in "value" in 5 years. Now, out in the boonies there are some bargains for sure but within an hours drive to either Dallas or Fort Worth, not so much.

Had dinner last night with Vance and his wife Diana. Vance will be heading out tomorrow to mix the sound for Chris Stapleton in the remote audio truck for The Super Bowl performance. Very, cool~!
Spent the day today with Chris Mara, and his wife, Joly
And tonight I just came back from Paul Wolff's house, and a wonderful dinner with him and his wife.
What can I say.... these last few days have been wonderful, and the people I've met, are some of the nicest, warmest, open & honest people I've ever met, anywhere!
Tomorrow, a tour of Blackbird, with John McBride, and I've been asked to speak at the Academy.... (why, I haven't a clue?)

Super cool! Any luck finding a place here?
I just realized you were in Queens in the 70's. My band The Demons rehearsed in Queens occasionally, I forget the name of the studio there, but it was close to the 59th St. bridge. It was a place many CBGB bands went to. I played at The Coventry a few times as most NYC bands did then, somewhere between 75' and 77'.

OK, so today I had lunch with Dino Elefante, and Steve Marcantonio, a complete comedy team! Haha Then spoke to a class at the Blackbird academy, after which we headed over to Studio "C" for a Atmos listening session... Although I'm still not sold on Atmos, but I must say, it was quite breathtaking, especially "Rocket Man"
Then we went to Chas Sanfords house / studio. Yet another AMAZING PERSON!
Once again, all I can say, everyone has gone out of their way to make our visit to TN. extra special Now we are headed out to Nick Pellegrino's restaurant "Mangia" for a 7 course meal!
WOW...

Hey Martin, Yep, I'm a old guinea from Queens! Haha
Yes I did sound at the Coventry, many times, as well as all major City joints back then;
Max's Kansas City, CBGB's (and the Gallery) Hurrah, Limelight, 82 Club, Tracks, The Great Gildersleaves, The Ritz, Snafu, etc, etc, etc, and another 20 or so clubs in Long Island And my band at the time "The Special Guests" would play most of those joints all the time.
The place you are thinking about, was where my third Queens studio was located, was called "Roxie" rehearsal, off of Review Ave. in Long Island City. As you stated, all those bands rehearsed there. Owned by Keith Angelino, and Charlie Oliver, at the front desk was Ronnie, (with the Buddy Holly glasses!)
I had the biggest upstairs room, which was my recording room!
From there, I actually partnered up with Keith in a separate business, a studio in Manhattan called "Beethoven Studio" on 31st and 6th. 2 rooms, 48 tracks in each...we bought an existing studio called "First Choice" which was a R & B studio, but once we purchased it, the Rock n Rollers came in and the R & B kinda went away. That said, before they were all gone, I did get to record "The Fat Boys", "Shannon", "Curtis Blow", "Chaka Kahn", and many more...
I'll spare you the rest of my history, but from that place in Manhattan, I moved upstate NY to build studio #4, #5, #6, which is the one I'm packing up as soon as I get back home.

Dang, it is a small world isn't it. We must know each other. I played at Coventry, Max's, CB's, Gildersleeves, Tracks, Limelight, and rehearsed at Roxie many times.
Will you be in town much longer? Maybe we can meet for coffee?
I'm right across the street from the Nashville Farmers Market and the Bicentennial Park. It's sort of North Downtown, five minutes from everything.

Dude and you recorded Immolation - Close to a World Below! Legendary record. A death metal album that for once actually sounds good. I love Alex Hernandez’s drumming. A shame he got sick and had to leave that band. Fall From a High Place is an amazing track and I love his performance on the Bringing Down the World DVD show.

Dan, Yes I did, Funny story as I turned them down for months, and months, before finally agreeing to produce / engineer that record. The reason was simple, I never did anything like that before, and I told them I'm really not a fan of that style of music and or production. But I'd take on the job, if I could produce it the way I knew how, which was like a rock record. And after I did it, I apologized for ruining their career, as that record initially wasn't received well. Now I hear it's a classic. GO figure.
The guys in the band have become like family to me!

Martin, Sorry bud, I missed ya. Already on my way home, in Roanoke now... Will be back in a few weeks, found a nice little Church I want to buy.
Headed back home to pack everything up.
And I'm sure our paths have crossed, quite a few times.

Wow, a church? That's a fantasy of mine. It's always been that, or an abandoned service station to convert to a studio.
I'll send you a PM with my contact info. Let me know when you're headed this way and we'll get together then. If there's anything I can do to help, just let me know.

It's a small Church, which is exactly what I want. I've been searching for a smaller old Hall, Church, Synagogue, etc, for a few years now. Most are too big to be comfortable, and where I was in Northeast a real drag to heat or cool, would cost lot of $$$ to keep it comfortable. Smaller rooms are more realistic, at least for me. So now on my way home to work out the details, and pack up the house, studio, and pub. Attachments:

Martin, it ain't mine yet...! Haha
Let's see what the bank says this week?
In the meantime, friend of ours, a carpenter who we brought to the Church to check it out, is also a weekend guitar player.
Funny enough he happened to have his acoustic in his truck, so we had him play and sing a few tunes while we were there, the room had just the most beautiful acoustic, the reverb was amazing, not overblown, boomy, it sounded perfect as it was....
That helped seal the deal. So, fingers crossed.

Hey Chris, Nope... His name is Steve, I just met him, he was working on a friends house in Donelson and came by the Church to take a look see. Since he had a guitar in his truck, I had him play and sing few minutes in the Sanctuary, and it sounded pretty darn great!
