Thoughts about this Neumann mic?

I was very strongly considering this one before I bought my old M149 years ago.
From what I can tell, it’s a very mid-focused mic, kind of in the general U47 family of sound, but much more forward/pushed, if that makes sense.
Very similar design to the 149 — K47 capsule, 6111 tube that’s soldered in place, transformerless output. Same PSU as the 149. But sonically, it’s got its own thing going on. I feel like the 149 is a much better mic overall, but I’ve heard some great recordings with the 147 as well.
I wouldn’t pay retail price, though.

I saw a pre-owned one listed relatively local to me for about half of retail.

I’d buy a Soyuz 017 and be happy.

I saw a pre-owned one listed relatively local to me for about half of retail. That's probably a good price.
To be honest, though, unless you already have a solid 47-ish mic on hand and you're sure you want the 147, I'd much rather put the money toward something like a Peluso 2247 or Golden Age GA47. Or maybe a Stam. You could also hunt around for a good deal on a used 149. Not sure how likely this is with inflation these days, but I got mine for $2600 back in 2018.

For that price I'd be tempted to just grab one for different options.
Maybe worth noting, the M147 does seem to distort on higher SPL sources. One experience I remember was using it at the end of a BD tunnel and realizing afterwards it was overloading at the mic. Sounded fine in the mix (the particular session/studio didn't have a whole lot of mics to use, so that found its way on drums). I honestly don't know how loud is too loud for the microphone, but it handled other acoustic sources just fine after.
Figured I'd make that note, since I don't think I've ever had that issue arise in other Neumann mic.

Thoughts about this Neumann mic? The ONE (and probably only, but I haven't tried them all) Neumann mic that I don't like. Haven't used one for years though. Maybe I could find a use for it now....

Upstairs in Studio B at the studio, there is a pair that seems to now be permanently on a solid-state amp Leslie top for a B3; after I placed them there at least a year ago. Guess the studio owner and the players are loving them there okay-enough. I’ll eventually try them on outside kick and bass amps. Studio A, with a tube amp Leslie for a B3, I’ve been gravitating toward Blue Woodpeckers on top. I have to foamy and pop-filter them though due to wind though.

Had a pair. Sold a pair. One of my few sales I never regretted. Thought they were great at first. But as I used them more and more my opinion changed. Tried it on virtually everything. Did not excel on anything. I know some people maybe say bass. But I would rather have a different mic on bass. (Upright - I use AEA 44 ribbon and a condenser and blend.) But just not worth having given all the other choices. I found it too murky. Not a euphonic thickness, but a murky thickness. Your opinion may differ!

Very mid forward. Not a fan of it on vocals at all.

Yeah I would probably buy a TLM103 before a M147.

Yeah I would probably buy a TLM103 before a M147. If I found out that an M147 was a TLM 103 with a tube I wouldn't be surprised. LOL

Not a very nice sounding Mic IMO , as others have said it's very mid focused (in a broad band way) and would probably only find favour in a specialist position whatever that might be. Cheers, Ross

Not a fan, I'd take a TLM 193 over one any day of the week.

Wasn’t a fan when I tried one on a few sources.
Did some work on a Pretty Reckless record and it’s the mic Kato used for Taylor’s vocal. He was a pretty funny dude - asked him if he wanted to shoot out a bunch of the vintage mic collection and his answer was “why the hell would I do that - I keep a 147 in my Jeep and I can punch a vocal anywhere anytime I want to”. Fair enough dude hahaha

I demoed one once and thought someone had stuffed cotton wool into the head basket! I thought what an odd little mic - not cheap either. Apparently, they can sound good on a bass guitar amp? I personally struggled to find a use for it.

Right now with a handmade capsule around $1500... Beesneez BU67 for a tube mic IMHO. Chris

I got an M147 as part of a trade years ago and it's been good overall. I like it.
Sounds like a 47Fet to me... mid forward yes. It's not the classic sorta 47ish voice at all.
Its been in front of more vocalists then I can count. No not always a winner but nothing is. Kick drum? Nah. Sounds fine I guess if you like that tone. Don't really dig a 47Fet on kick out either. Kinda boring IMO. There's better places to hang it.
147 tends to sound excellent in front of clean Fender amps like a twin or super reverb. Smooth! Occasionally loud Marshall kinda stuff... acoustic guitars? Absolutely! Horns & brass no problem. Right now I'm using it as the "catchall overdub" mic.
Maybe not a do-everything mic but a solid addition to a working studios locker.
