I just heard on a bluetooth speaker, and I really love the energy SB is bringing. The vocal seems in a better place, and the whole mix is better glued.
Maybe it's overcooked, both in terms of saturation and eq, but it's just a suspicion, as I can judge that correctly on these monitors.

gravesnumber9 I think you're being a little hard on yourself — the version without the SB doesn't suck at all! In fact, it's really not that drastically different.
My preference for this mix would be no SB. With the SB, the low end gets a little flabby and the midrange starts to sound less cohesive. Not a dealbreaker or anything, though. Both sound fine.
Ok, you guys are giving me food for thought. Good thing I haven't released it yet! I was blaming the flabby low end on one of my "poor man's mastering" decisions. Might be an easier fix than I thought! I'll post a re-mix this afternoon/evening. Time to get this thing finished, was never meant to be an opus of engineering but... well, you know what they say about perfect is the enemy of good? Yeah, I don't listen to that enough.

It was some sort of weird Apple Movie format that MetricAB couldn't recognize. Frankly I've been having a ton of trouble with iTunes just in general, they really really want to push you to streaming instead of buying stuff. I'm sure there's user error involved but I'm pretty good with tech and have never had this problem before with MetricAB. Spent almost an hour on it and then gave up and just used my older references. But it sparked the bug to comb through my other tools and find another solution. So these are music tracks/songs but they downloaded as movie files? Yeah, and I can't figure out why. I assumed it was some new way Apple was trying to force me to stay in its ecosystem.

I really like your song. I'm afraid it's going to ear-worm me to bed I'm not sure how I feel about the SB version. It seems a bit congested. I think I prefer the mix without. I love the song. To me, the version without the SB is much better. The SB version imparts a nice tone to the music, but it flattens the vocal dynamics and makes it almost silabant. It feels overdriven. I don't think the song needs any extra 'mojo.' It's awesome as it is. Cool track gravesnumber9 . It's kinda The Band and Velvet Underground lovechild or something. I dig it! Sonically, I prefer the non-SB version. The SB version sounds really scooped to me and a more natural presentation without the mids scooped out fits the aesthetic better for me. Totally subjective obvs.

I'm with the gang. I much prefer the version without the SB. The song and production have a very cool late 60s, early 70s type vibe and the mix without the SB accentuates that. It's got a ton more clarity and definition. The SB makes things crunchy in a distracting way and flabby in a way that sounds like listing on your buddy's home theater system with the sub up too high. You mentioned the vocal tone changing and I agree. On the non SB one of my first thoughts was "find out what mic is on the vocal." On the SB it sounds pinched and 57 like (and anyone who knows me knows that isn't meant in a good way). The non SB is open and inviting the SB sounds like "this is what people thing modern mixes are supposed to sound like." And like many others have said, I love this tune and production. It's got a nice "Torn and Frayed" vibe, though not as loose

That's why I was struggling with the "mastering" actually because everything I did made it sound "more" like that. I think the blame is actually after the SB though. I think got a bit of "new toy" syndrome with the Tegeler Creme and overcooked it on there on top of being very aggressive on the SB. Either way, I hear exactly what y'all are hearing and I think I know how to fix it! ""this is what people thing modern mixes are supposed to sound like."" Haha. So, so, so guilty. Just guilty as charged to the extreme! Haha. I still the thing the other non-SB version sounds boxy but at least it has edge. Making adjustments tonight!

The Creme seems to sound good when it wasn't hit as hard because of the SB being out, but I could be wrong. I'm interested and excited to hear what you come up with.

I'm glad to hear there was a Creme after the SB! I didn't think the SB would be able to change the vocal dynamics so drastically, and that confused me.
I almost take the SB out of my shopping list. Haha.

Wasn’t the only difference between the mixes the Silver Bullet being engaged or in bypass?

Wasn’t the only difference between the mixes the Silver Bullet being engaged or in bypass? I clarified in the second post in the thread that the SB was also causing the signal to hit the Creme harder. Probably got lost in the swirling topics.

One other factor to keep in mind, the SB is pushing into a Tegeler Audio Creme so it's not the only thing in the chain... Ok, not the second post. But it did dawn on me a few minutes after posting that this could be a factor.

Didn’t you say you had the sub and high EQ cranked all the way on the SB? Yeesh.

Haha. Not quite.
I use the bass setting (as opposed to sub) but it’s the highs I “crank”.
On the other hand I pretty much never boost highs on any individual tracks unless it’s desperately in need.
All that “add some air to the vocals” stuff, I don’t do cuz I’m mixing into a boost. Obviously I cut as needed.
Also, the boost is dramatic by SB standards but I think it’s really only a few db.

I also think I prefer the Non SB. The SB is maybe adding a bit much on the 'air/excitement' range? Maybe if it was dialed back like 40-50%? Feels slightly out of place for the genre. BUT- to each their own and its your band!

BUT- to each their own and its your band! Uploading some blind mixes. In a second here. One of which is a reset of SB and another processor not yet named back to “two weeks ago default” settings. Stay tuned.

OK, I've uploaded four versions of this track and am starting a new thread. I'd love your votes! Should be fun...
