I have entered a singer songwriter performance contest and I need to submit a live performance of a couple of songs. I don’t have much serious experience with trying to capture vocal and acoustic guitar simultaneously. The recording isn’t supposed to have “post production” or added processing so, I need to capture it all on the way in.
My room is good. I have these mics to choose from: Geflell M92.1s Gefell UM70 Gefell M295 Shure KSM 313 shure Sm7b sE Electronics VR 1 (2) Beyer M160 Beyer M88 Beyer 201
Chain would be Daking micpre > capi VC528ml > 828es to Studio One. I could do this stereo as well. Not really supposed to use any reverb or compression. Rules state “unprocessed ”.
What would be the best way to record myself?

2 figure 8 patterns using the nulls for the best separation. Point the null of the guitar mic at your mouth, and the null of the vocal mic at the guitar.

Depending on the song maybe even just the Gefell m92.1. I’ve become a fan of one mic approach.

I was thinking Figure 8 as well. I have lots of choice. Both the m92.s and the Um70 have figure 8 as a choice and the VR1s and the KSM 313 ribbons are figure 8. Just need to start experimenting.
If I try the M92s.1 by itself, would it be best set omni?

Could work beautifully or could sound better in cardioid, hard to tell. If you go with one mic try to back it up a little further than you might normally and balance the height between your voice and guitar for a nice balance. But I’d try dual figure eights first, like the others said, with your umt70 and m92s.

In addition to your close mics, yeah you can’t use reverb.. but I’d use mics in the distance for stereo room, Beyer would be my go to

Since it’s minimal processing I’m going to take a different approach M88 on vocals, it will probably take less compression plus if it’s video it will give a clearer face shot probably the UM71 on guitar.

I do love me some m88. But having personally sung into that exact same Gefel (thanks for the loan!) I can’t imagine singing into anything else if I owned that thing. Butter.

Oh I do love Gefell’s at one point I was selling more than anyone else in the US, but the way I read the requirements they want a live feel, and mixing live I know I can get away ( you know your an audio geek when miss spelled away results in autocorrect to AEA). Some times it’s not about ( actually quite often) the absolutely best tool but the best tool at hand that requires the least amount of work. This is why dynamics are all over broadcast, that tiny bit of compression.

Don’t have to submit video. Just an “unprocessed” live recording. It’s supposed to be a pretty much warts and all performance but, might as well track it as best as we can.

I can offer a piece of simple advice. I've seen a million singer/songwriter gigs and done a few myself. One thing that most, I'd say 90% or more do is play the guitar too loud, masking the intelligibility of the lyrics. Essentially, they hide behind the guitar.
Get that vocal upfront where it belongs.

Thanks. I am not typically the one that sings many of the songs I write but, I am trying to position myself to get out and play more on my own. Entering this contest regardless of the outcome, forces me to think about how I am gonna pull it off.
