Anyone else using Fircomp 2 for clean compression? I just bought it as another possible tool when I'm not looking for color. I'm curious how it compares to Kotelnikov GE. I have both and will be doing some testing in the next few days when I get through a couple sessions. Just curious on people's thoughts that have used it. I like to support smaller developers when they have something cool and useful: MJUC, Crave, Boz Big Clipper, SIR, etc.
Seems like Jon V has been working on this compressor for a few years at least. I know there was an earlier free version, but for less than $30 I figured it was worth a shot.

Hmmm. Had a little time and did a quick comparison with Kotelnikov GE. I put the two on the master bus with similar settings, other than threshold. Kotelnikov was the clear winner by quite a large margin. It retained the punch and clarity of the mix better than Fircomp. There are many settings I can modify on Fircomp. Even turning off the program dependent release didn't make it any punchier. Fircomp just sounded smoother, but that wasn't what I was looking for on this mix.
Oh well.
While I was at it, I tossed a bunch of compressors on the master bus and adjusted each to sound it's best. A couple surprises.
Softube American Channel (API) - slow attack and fast release, really sounded good. Too bad the metering for gain reduction is worthless. But it sounded good
Tried pretty much every PA compressor. Shadowhills, SPL Iron, Townhouse, None of them really did it for me. They all felt kind of squishy soft, probably need to play with them more. Vertigo VSC2 was probably the best. Kind of a cleaner SSL
Waves SSL buss comp. - I was surprised. I liked it better than The Glue (which is always a favorite)
Pulsar Mu - made the mix a little thicker but did have a very good sound - one of my favorites on this mix
DDFM Magic Death Eye - Kind of forgot about this. Ended up being very very good. A little punchier than Pulsar Mu
MJUC - didn't do anything for me on the master buss - too smooth and colored
Molotok - Very colored - not suited for master buss but a real nice sound
I might play with them more in the morning. Who knows, my opinion could change drastically over night.
Anyway, kind of a dumb thread but maybe someone will find it of use.
