ericn That's a great little hack! I'll have to try that some time. Yeah I developed it after 2 days of demoing mics for a guy who kept complaining that he couldn’t get 2 takes to sound the same. At that point in time I would burn a CD with the 57 as left and the demo as right so even in the car you could switch back and forth via the balance control. The sad part it is the guys who would eat up days in the demo room would also price shop you to death, they never realized time was money, one of the smartest moves I ever made was getting a terminal set up in the demo control room so I could deal with other clients and do demos. Had one guy get pissed and start yelling is that “customer more important than me “ always fun explaining “ yes he spends more in a week than you have in 6 years and it’s all custom length tape and time sensitive, in fact he has space in the whare house devoted to his most common orders”, don’t really miss it.

The stereo functionality on the Sphere seems cool. I like the idea that you can manipulate it after the fact. It would be cool to see more mics like that. That said, the modeling doesn't much appeal to me, if for no other reason than that I don't see how you accurately model the off axis response of all of those various mics. General tonality? Sure, I suppose that's kind of doable, but a fig 8 mics is going to have a way different null and off axis pickup (or lack thereof) than a cardioid mic. General tonality isn't really as hard to do (or as important) as off-axis response, which is where nasty colorations can sneak in...
Great post!

Ok, but sphere isn’t unison, so are you also experimenting with a ua neve pre and comparing to your GR? In this case, no Unison inserts used. Both mics ran into Great River MP-4 then into Apollo x8p line ins. You got the Stam pretty recently, right? In that case, you might still be adjusting to it. I bet if you spend a few more months with it, you'll know exactly what you're hearing every time.
This is great advice, thanks for this perspective. I think you're right, I need more time with the mic to find my feet, er, ears and get to know its nuances. Also, when shooting out multiple mics, I know it might seem more scientific to record all at same time so as to avoid separate takes being a confounding variable, but you actually introduce a different (but equally confounding) variable when doing this: it's usually not possible to be on-axis with multiple LDCs at the same time.
Yup, another great point and certainly a factor here coloring the comparison. I remain surprised that the STAM-251 didn't straight up mop the floor with the L22. It sounds better, much more air at the top end, better low mid presence to my ears, too. But the L22 with the Putnam 251-E sounds good, too! Here's the take, with the two mics alternating line by line, woodblock indicates switch, first line is the STAM-251: STAM-251 v L22 Putnam 251-E (Around Noon) on SoundCloudThanks for sharing this feedback. I come here to learn, and appreciate this forum.

Thanks for sharing. I can pretty much immediately hear the difference in this clip, and while it's not major, it's not exactly subtle either. It becomes more pronounced around 0:59 on the line "I was taught don't apologize."
The Stam just sounds better, especially in the midrange. The Sphere sounds kind of congested and wooly in comparison.
That said, it may indeed be possible to get the Sphere sounding just as good if you take the time to find its sweet spot with regards to angling, distance, outboard, etc. As an example, my Upton 251 sounds best about 10 - 12" away. There have been a few times where I mistakenly recorded too close, and it completely ruined those takes. Like, totally murky and unusable. But in its sweet spot? Easily the best mic I've ever had the pleasure of using for my voice.
Definitely experiment with the Sphere and maybe even try out some other emulations against the 251 to see how it fares. But I have a feeling you'll end up rolling with the Stam in most cases.
