Hi all -
Does anyone have experience with the Austrian Audio OC18 ?
Matched pairs on sale at Guitar Center (possibly elsewhere) for $1099 and I don't have a matched pair of LDCs. The don't include the cool spider mounts, but that can be an add on...
thanks
Craig

Probably my favorite modern utility condenser. I’ve had a pair for quite some time, and they’re good on nearly anything. Lower output than most.
That’s a great price.

They certainly look very nice.
Are they true condensers or electret mics?
Do you find they are prone to sibilance tracking vocals?
Thanks

SE T2/AT4050/414 XLS/Heiserman Type 19 would be all easier, for a Geico Caveman like me, to deal with. I would even like the Warm WA-14 more to deal with. But for an experienced Pro, I bet the AA's are no problema. Chris

At that price I would certainly be giving The Heisermann a look as well as the Sony C100 and C80 and probably the United 47 and Serrano 87.

Sony not the fave on Customer Service. Right Eric? Thanks, Chris Customer service isn’t great, but it how long will they as a gigantic Corporation be committed to these mics? The one thing a couple of guys have pointed to in private that might be good for these is that Sony wants as much of the podcast gear market. Lots of guys like the Sony SLR’s for video, but those are not “Sony Broadcast“ products.

I use my pair (OC818+OC18) all the time on live drum overheads, grand piano and acoustic. Easy recommendation for those applications. I often get favourable comments from drummers on the kit sound in their IEMs, and they need very little processing at FOH. The OC18 is popping up on a lot of stages, and I can see why.
I will say, it’s not my first choice on lead vocals, as I usually want something with a more pronounced character and less open top-end. I have the Vanguard V13 and Beesneez 87 for this. However I have used the OC818 on backing vocals, or thrown in as a second safety mic and it’s totally fine, you’re just not going to get that “larger than life” vibe from it. Maybe a character preamp would help - I don’t own one of those 😅.
In summary, very useful and well made mics that will be great in a ton of situations – but get something else if vocals is the main application.

The sale at Guitar Center is for the Cardioid only version - the OC18 as shlep indicated. The Heiserman type 19 has the great capsule from Heiserman's 47 mics (HK47) and three patterns. It is great to have omni and figure-8.
Is there anyone here using the Heiserman type 19 on grand piano or overheads? Thanks!

Looks like some kind of deal coming on the OC818 too.

Here is a comparison I found comparing the AA OC818 and the DPA 4011A with unprocessed classical guitar. OC818 and OC18 have the same capsule. We all hear things a differently and have different preferences. I was not in the room to hear the guitar being played live, however, the way I hear music in my head, I prefer the AA. I have a preference to have a clear rendition of the note being played first and foremost. Austrian Audio OC818 vs DPA 4011A | Classical Guitar

Guitar Center Pro is probably blowing out their real pro gear. Who buys from them?

It's a sale, multiple sources. Either trying to generate interest or they are going bye bye.

They sound like C12’s without a tube. The capsule is possibly the best modern CK12 style.

Hmm... I better re-listen/re-evaluate then sometime. Plus OC16 streets here for only around $400. Maybe less later on (?). Chris

Are the Austrian Audio OC18 (cardioid only) and the OC818 (with multiple patterns) the exact same capsule? Or is one single diaphram and the other dual diaphram? And does that make a difference?

That’s correct, both have the CKR12 capsule, but the OC18 is only single diaphragm. I have one of each and can’t tell them apart in cardioid.

Can't see tskguy ever allowing that to happen. Especially when you consider that the $1100 for a pair of the OC18s includes the distribution network and retail margins.

Can't see tskguy ever allowing that to happen. Especially when you consider that the $1100 for a pair of the OC18s includes the distribution network and retail margins. It was my “up market suggestion my friend “😜. Besides at the time I don’t think the special price had been mentioned yet 😎, and I of course wish they could sell the type 19 at that price😁. Plus if I was spending $550 I would still give the type 19 a serious consideration because if your going to spend $550, I think even if that $550 is a bargain the Type 19 and the Sonys at the very least deserve a listen so you can decide if that $550 is a bargain or just a lower price. From my days as a gear pimp, way to many who bought into a special deal were originally looking at mics in the original price point, bought into the deal but over time realized they still needed / wanted what they were originally looking at. The other thing to consider because I know people will justify the purchase of the AA is that they can sell them used and probably recoup most of their investment, well the bad news is If my hunch that they might be clearing these out is right, the used price will be based on the close out price ( besides using all the arguments to justify someone else buy the sale mic , yes I have fallen for the same arguments only these arguments were strictly in my head.)

Heiserman fully made in U.S. with incredible capsule. $550 for OC18 is for cardioid only. We really do not know the discount yet on the OC818 multi-pattern. I would love to hear the Heiserman in dual omni on overheads. (Hmmm - I have two 47T mics that I hope to try out for that soon.)
