Setting 16 channel levels automatically looked very handy indeed using the auto gain feature.

I had a drummer over the other day, this would have come in handy.
Much handier than the Pre module for my Aurora, more money, only 4 pres, plus I have to ship/insure and send it, right across the country as only they install:(

My first question is whether or not auto-gain comes with a noise penalty. It frequently does in other devices.

I like Audient a lot but one of their big selling points over the years has been that they use the same high quality, class a, mic Pres in all of their devices. From their consoles to their interfaces. This new Evo line seems to be a change from that. It’s probably still pretty decent but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little disappointed in the direction they took.

It’s just one product, aimed at a lower price point, if it was $2000’ish,, would you have paid that?

Warren Huart hopes you're doing marvelously well...
No, but in all seriousness - Audient's stuff is the very definition (to me) of "eh, it's fine". There's certainly no barrier to you making a good recording with their preamps, but there's not much in the way of embellishment or excitement either. With the tendency these days to capture clean and grime it up later if that's the ask, they're very workmanlike. I had an ASP880 as my "Channels 17-24" preamps - where hi-hat mics and bass amp mics tended to go. Again, not bad at all but they didn't blow up my dress either.
Not sure what's happening with the form factor on those new Audient units. If it doesn't fit on my desk, it better fit in a rack.

I couldn't resist doing this to Warren one day. Just some light-hearted IG trolling. (pic)

When Ihad only 1 Apollo for a while and it was channel 9-16 is DID sound fine though.

Yea, I use the ASP800 that I bought here on RGO and it is nice. It's the 8 extra channels I use with my Apollo x8p for mobile stuff. No color to speak of but sometimes I just need the channels.

The specs on the EVO preamps are different than the Audient console preamps. The console preamps appear to use the ubiquitous discrete-JFET-input-followed-by-an-IC-opamp approach. The EVO are probably all-IC opamp based.
Not that there's (necessarily) anything wrong with that...

Yes, these preamps are not at all the same as on the ASP 880 or 800 or the consoles.
Worse? No idea, but they are getting that price point down somehow.

They're probably using a monolithic preamp chip -- like the THAT 1512. Those chips run about $3.80 each if bought by the thousand. They actually sound really nice too.
