Wonder what his process on vocals is with the EC? Yeah, me too - I didn't know he'd used it in that capacity. I also wonder how the Wavesfactory Echo Cat compares - was planning to pick it up over the holidays, but I never noticed it on sale, so didn't get it.
My biggest complaint with my old El Cap was that it was hard to get it precisely in time with whatever tempo I was shooting for. It would go out of time with my other delays. Or the drummer. The v.2 seems to allow MIDI input for time code...

In the video I saw, he timed it by ear, slightly different for each one but not wildly different. Just enough to add an echo with one panned left and the other right. It's also pretty well documented that he puts splits vocal on two tracks with a UAD 1176 on one and a UAD Fatso, all buttons, warmth at 4 or 5 absolutely crushing it. Vocals also hit a paralell GML 8900.

Man, thèse Stapleton tunes are killing me. Ordered.
Ok, back to panning.

Not him by any stretch but dedicating a mult to OTO out to PCM 80 has been pretty amazing. Same vein, outside the box, etc. YMMV

For me, the more acoustic singer/songwriter stuff is way better than his “electric” stuff. The mixes are outstanding.

Ok, question. For those that do pretty much LCR panning, how do you deal with arrangements that don’t have similar parts wide L&R. So let’s ignore the Center stuff. For example there’s one acoustic, let’s say it’s a strumming part. Do you tend to send a reverb or delay to the other side? Or not necessarily depending what else is playing?
Perhaps too context dependent, but throwing it out there. What if the acoustic is the only instrument? Would you pan it center and let delay or reverb go to the sides.

Or to put it another way, if somewhat vague, how do you keep your mixes deep big and wide using LCR? Particularly if the arrangement is somewhat spare. I have to admit, mine just seem to get thin.

That link doesn't work for me. Any chance you could post it somewhere I can hear it without subscribing to a music service? I love the Starting Over video. Is this video the same mix? I hear some similar techniques in both those recordings and subsequent mixes. First there are 4 mics on Chirs. Coles and a U47 (likely a 48 in figure of 8) on vocal. And then there's a 77 on the acoustic guitar body and another 47 (or 48) on the neck of the acoustic guitar. You can hear the movement as he slightly moves around. Vance is clever at slightly pulling things around anyhow, doing it very subtly. The electric guitars are overdubbed, at least that's the indication. very subtle again. The off-time acoustic guitar part is interesting considering who it's coming from - anything coming Cobb or Powell is usually flawless. That's intentionally pushy to create tension? In the second song, The bass pulls slightly left and the kick pulls slightly right. Don't know why, but I do that same thing very often too. Just say, 2L and 2R on them, just enough so that there's no chance they walk over each other. Always nice work anyhow.

Well this finally showed up in my mailbox. From the UK!?
Anywho, surprised at how much of it is monoish. It seems like most of the supporting instruments that aren’t centered come in on the left. At least the first ones like subtle keys or acoustic. Not always though. And my stereo is doing some funky things so maybe it’s just that. Or my ears. I like most of it, needs more Morgane.
