are you using dust covers for your gear? i was thinking bout this several times: i got like a mastering desk with preamps, comps on the left and right side of the desk looking up (slightly inclined). obviously they are collecting dust over time. the DI inputs could gather dust inside the jacks ... also my patchbay with all the inputs ...
are you covering uo your gear to protect it from dust?

Nah. I use my gear every day and I'd always be taking the dust covers on and off. But you're right - stuff does collect dust. No way around it IME. I use a 3: very soft horse hair paint brush to gently remove the buildup when I think of it.

If you leave your gear on and it runs hot dust covers can lead to problems, bought a PSU for a DDA that looked like the Focusrite Green series till I scrapped off the melted dust cover remnants!

I only cover the LDC mics that are setup on the kit. The rest of the gear gets dusted every time it becomes too much for me to look at. :-)

That shouldn’t be a problem but a little compressed air and or deoxit cures it in a pinch.

I've put dust covers on my studio gear every night for the last 30 years! In the morning I take them off - late at night after the studio gear is cold again I put them on. My friend arrived early once for a session and I hadn't yet taken the covers off all the studio gear and he said - I see the studio's still in it's pyjamas

I’m only replying to this thread to say that as I was scrolling past it tonight, I thought it was titled “duvet covers.”

I’m only replying to this thread to say that as I was scrolling past it tonight, I thought it was titled “duvet covers.” The people on this forum could argue about buying literally anything. Myself included. And honestly, a duvet cover one area where you really shouldn’t skimp. Maybe it’s different if it’s for a guestroom, but if it’s for a comforter that you use on a daily basis you really get what you pay for. Although of course, when it comes to thread count,m you can reach a point of diminishing returns eventually.

During the lockdown timeframe of the pandemic a studio engineer in town was (obviously) not getting the necessary business to make ends meet. So he started building custom studio furniture and put his offerings on Craigslist. I thought his work was awesome, so I worked with him to modify the design to function as my main studio workspace (three 8 space angled racks that sort of replace the classic mixing console location) but with a bit more desk room at the bottom to comfortably use a mouse/ keyboard for my EE day job. He built it perfectly to my request and I love it.
But… I ended up coming back to him a month or two after: I was thinking about gear all day long when I should have been thinking about work circuits; had him build me a custom wood cover too, to completely block the 19 inch rack gear, out of sight / out of mind. Also functions as a great dust cover.
Another thing, I noticed when I’m in “studio mode” and the heat comes on at my place, I get more dust build up than usual…to stop that stuff from getting into the 1/4 inch jacks on the faceplates of my gear, I just bought a bunch of cheap 1/4 inch to 1/8 inch headphone adapters on Amazon to block it when gear not used.

Yes I do, I use plain old towels on my desk, I built a plexi cover for my tape machine, I got cases for my guitars and linen sheets on my drums. My amps have their own covers. I hate dust, it sucks! And it messes up electronics.

If you're not using something all the time, just try getting tea towels or bar towels to thrown over things. And a hair dryer set to cool works great at blowing dust off something if you can move it. Those disposable dusters are best for collecting dust if it's stationary. Like ericn said, you have to keep it Clean or it ends up with problems. I add to that, either way you can end up with troubles if you're not careful. Trial and error!
