Hey gang, I note that the good folks at AML have a 1084 out that appears packed with some new bells and whistles. www.audiomaintenance.com/acatalog/aml%2d17%2d051%5fextended%5finfo%2ehtmlHas anyone heard them? Do they keep pace with their 1073 counter parts? (And thus by extension the other Neve offerings)? I’m in the market for 2 new neve channels and am debating those vs the 1073… Thanks!

Haven't heard these yet, but if the quality and build guide is anything like their 500 series solid state Pultecs, I'd bet they are top notch. Had these 1084s been available a few years ago when I started buying and assembling preamps, I'd have bought a bunch. After I got some CAPI VP28s, I got hooked on the DIY stuff, and that led me to the AML Pultecs from above. Still might pick up a few 1084 kits if I can find more 500 rack space.
If you're buying pre-assembled from AML, you're golden. If you're assembling yourself, get ready for a really nice project, as there is a ton of parts in there! I always liked assembling these kits during the NFL playoff season for some reason. I just had the games on in the background and went to work. By the time halftime hit, it always seemed to coincide with a well-deserved soldering break.

If I had the space, I'd have two of these without even demo-ing them. This is the 1081 Class AB pre with an EQ - you can run these as mic, line, or DI which is a nice touch. I've got two of the ez1081's and they're really, solid, hefty pres.
The only caveat with the AML kits is that you'll receive the resistors pre-trimmed. That makes board-stuffing a bit of a headache as you can't bend the legs out to hold them in place when you flip to solder. A few skinny strips of light painters tape does the trick.

Ahhh, good point! After assembling about 15 CAPI kits, I got used to bending over the legs. Certainly made the AML a bit of a different animal, but I think what you lose in leg-bending you gain in cleanup afterwards. There is a certain joy in clipping all those legs after you solder up a good row of resistors.

Are you sure it’s the class AB 1081 pre and not a class A 1084 Pre? I understood this to be a 1073 with different EQ points…. Would welcome being corrected! Cheers

Cheers The description does say "Class A", unlike their 1081 which specifies "Class A/B". I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure the Neve 1084 was as you describe, a 1073 with different EQ points.

1084's are class A A 1084 is just a 1073 with the addition of a Low Pass filter, 3 selectable frequencies for the HF band and a Q switch for the mid band.... all basically identical circuitry to the 1073. There is now a video on our youtube channel: Colin www.audiomaintenance.com

Colin www.audiomaintenance.comYou're not wrong, Colin. (pronounced CO-Lynn or Call-in?) The 1073, 1061, 1081, 1084 are basically EQ modules in different iterations with an evolution of circuitry and features as our industry evolved in its demands. What about the preamp? All the same. There is no 1073 preamp, it is the 1290. The Twelve-Ninety is the preamp, which is why audioscape named the 500 N-seires preamp the V1290. And it is THE TITS! I have og 1073a, new 1073s, Vintech's 1073s and by far and away the best of the lot is the AS V1290. I just wish (sigh) I could be bragging about the AS N-style EQ modules which I've been championing for a few years now. Kudos to AML and BAE and AMS for making great N-style EQ modules!

I have a pair of AML 1073s, 1084s, and 4- 2254s. All great sounding units. The AML 1084s were the most time consuming builds I've ever built. 12 printed circuit boards, over 700 parts, and pre bent resistors ( must be taped down) per unit. I'd buy another pair, but pre built.

My bad. That's one thing to be said for employing people who work as professional copywriters (and moonlight as engineers) - we'd never let you just keep adding numbers to your product line. I'd talk you into calling the 1073 "the crisper", the 1081 "the voluminator", and the 1084 "the ambassador". Wouldn't mean one single bit of actual bullpuckey, but it would be easier to tell them apart.

My filmaker is always giving my assistant and I shit about how all our gear is just random numbers haha When I start rattling off which mics to grab and put where and which pre's to use he's just like "gibberish, all you're speaking is gibberish. How do you keep track of that crap?". Meanwhile, his stuff is named "V-Raptor". And Gemeni and stuff haha

I'm totally derailing here thanks to my Neve-numbering incompetence - but I can think of so many good and bad ones over the years:
"UltraMaximizer" "Finalizer" "SoundGoodizer" "Inflator"
You don't know if you're at NAMM or the National Association For Erotic Toys tradeshow sometimes.

If someone rebadges a DBX 266 as "El Conquistador", I might like it better. Alibaba, here I come.
