I have a lot of the same experience as you, and have used a ton of gear over the decades and I know exactly what you mean. Love the TG1, love the Sta-Level(John Kennedy is on his 10th one by now😆😆😆😆! Just kidding John, just had to say it!) although I love love Chandler I’ve had issues with the gear breaking down often, but I’m still a huge fan of some of Wades gear, sounds fabulous, and I’m sure to own more in the future if they are still supplying electricity to our area. We have a power plant closing down in the area and due to green energy and stupid politicians we aren’t going to have our own power anymore! So I guess I have to build my own personal power plant for the studio!!! It's a bit like me with the 6176, I've had three now and I always come to the same conclusion then sell it. I must just like the way it looks? Fingers crossed my Opto has been fine so far.. Also wait, what now? Are they limiting power due to lower generation via wind turbines or something like a hydroelectric dam or are they just saying best of luck folks? Pretty much best of luck folks! My favorite turn of events by our power company DTE Energy has this new scam of charging us more between the hours of 4pm-7pm for our electricity! Of course right when everyone uses it the most when we get home from work! Savages! We are being duped and it’s not just our local electricity provider! It’s much more deeper than this and it’s global! We need to stick together audio dudes!

I've got all the diseases. When I play guitar it makes me want all of the guitars and amps in the world. When I sing it makes me want all the mics and pres. When I mix I want all the hardware.

Our provincial gov’t has been doing this for years, euphemistically, they calling it time of use billing, as if their production costs (paid for from our taxes) changes, and they charge the highest rates during the day when, of course, people use the most electricity. Wonder how many of the politicians do their laundry at 3 am ?

When you don’t spend your own money and everyone else’s for your lifestyle, must be nice! Doing such a great service to the people😆😆😆. Kind of like John Kennedy buys Sta Levels! John can’t be a politician or he would have 10!😆😆😆😆

I have an AS Opto, Retro STA Level, Thermionic Phoenix MP and none of them sound dark or mushy - in fact the exact opposite. For really clean I have a Millennia Opto compressor and that sounds very musical in its action and there’s a choice of no colouration (passive shunt) solid state or tube paths my only criticism is it can be a bit slow. Probably the best of all of them for tracking is the Phoenix - it’s amazing on anything! I think my preference is for vari MU over Opto but I do use my opto comps a fair bit. I've had 4 LA-2A's including two originals, with every one of them the more compression I added the darker and mushier they got. It's literally the reason why I bought them, when in it's sweetspot let's say 5 - 7dB GR it rounds things off just enough but still keeps things nicely defined. It isn't going to do 15dB's worth of crushing comp and retain its composure, the Chandler Opto will. This is an extreme example of course but the point is said Chandler can do a crazy amounts of compression without affecting much. Also when I say "retro" I mean vintage, not Retro instruments. Some Vari-Mu's can get pretty dark as well..
In terms of compressors I've had, bought, sold or kept there's been a real smorgasbord.. Acme Opto, Chandler Opto, Tele 2A, Stam 2A, Manley Nu-Mu, Manley Vari-Mu T-bar & MS mod, IGS Tube Core, 6176, Serpent Splice, SSL Gbus, API 2500, 33609, DBX 676, FMR RNC, Warm 2A, Shelford "2254", Better Maker ML, Summit TLA-100, SSL E-Dyn (I'm not listing plugins here, this is all HW). Add all of that to the smorgasbord of interfaces, mixers, mic's and monitors it's not all that difficult to see where most of money has gone over the past 23 years ..
To some this might not be a massive list but I'm all compressor'd out mate, even though I wouldn't mind a Sta-Level I need not want nor know about any other comp out there.
For me the one to rule them all is the Thermionic Phoenix Mastering Plus - stunning on the stereo mix bus. Can smash drums. Amazing as a vocal or bass tracking compressor. Sounds amazing on acoustic guitar too. They're just a bit over £4k new but it's the best compressor I've ever used, and there's not many I haven't used. Second place goes to Retro STA Level. LA2A's are actually quite low on my list of favourites. One comp I really like is the Atomic Squeeze box - but these days, save for a couple of 1176's, I'm set for compressors.

I'd plan for not-February. Don't mean that in a bad way, just feel like I should caution you to lower your expectations for delivery time. Understood, appreciate the heads-up. It's a great price and should be worth the wait.

Apparently these may be finally shipping in about 2 weeks with the new transformers. Sure hope so! Anyway that's the latest report from Stam HQ, for anyone else who ordered early this year.
