Hey guys, thought I’d give an update and say thank you to everyone for your comments and help.
So the gig I was hired for got pushed back, there were some production delays from the video company that forced us to postpone. But what I’ll be working with is NOT an Atmos mix. The company hiring does work in Atmos, but not for these particular immersive exhibitions. Instead I’ll be working with a surround system setup on a Dante network. Half the job is troubleshooting the Dante connections and making sure the smpte is lining up with video, and making sure no one screwed anything up. The other half is helping adjust the final mix for each specific venue. I fly out in February for my first gig. Should be pretty cool, I’m excited, we’ll see how it goes.
As far as the whole discussion over immersive audio as a format…I get that the average music listener may not care or may not “get it”. But if you step outside the world of peoples living rooms and ear buds, there’s a huge, growing, market for immersive experiences. The Van Gogh Immersive exhibit grossed $250 million. And I think the King Tut exhibit grossed close to $500 million? There’s definitely money to be made in the format.
