Hello! I’m new here. Chris (chessparov) recommended that I check this group out, so here I am! I live about 30 minutes north of Dallas, TX. I write songs and compose instrumental music, and I typically record and produce myself (as most of us do). I do occasional production work for other musicians, and I have dabbled in commercial production over the last several years. I even mixed/co-produced an album for my teenage son earlier this year, and that was fun! I also teach guitar. I’ve played guitar for 35 years (started pretty young), and I’m a vocalist. I also play bass, drums, keys, and organ as needed. You know how it goes. I started recording with my Dad on his Teac 2340 as a child, graduated to Tascam/Fostex tape machines as a teen in the 90’s, and switched to digital recording around 1998 or so (first a Roland all-in-one, and then Pro Tools - I work in Logic Pro X most of the time these days). I’ll attach a photo of my home studio here. Attachment DeletedI'm currently working to upgrade my vocal chain (new mic/pre, etc), and I’m leaning towards a u87 or U67, so your input is welcome. I’ll attach a short vocal sample so that you can hear my voice in context through my 87 clone. Attachment DeletedAnyway, just looking forward to making some connections and learning a few things. I’d also love to be able to collaborate on some projects in the future. Thanks!

Hey Billy welcome aboard!
30 mins North of Dallas should put you close to my neighborhood. I live in Lewisville. There are others in the area as well.

Welcome to the neighborhood. Did you bring a casserole? We insist upon a casserole.

Welcome, Billy. This is a pretty good and welcoming crowd. Blue eye'd Angel sounds good on my laptop first thing in the morning. What don't you like about you current setup? U67 and 87 are always useful. If you don't have the scratch, the Serano 87 gets a lot of love here. Several of us commented on how the reminded us of our 70s model Neumann. I fell in love with (and should have bought) the Advanced Audio CM67se when I reviewed it for Tape Op.
I generally stay out of the million preamp mode, but I do like a U87 with a tube mic pre. I'm currently using Useful Arts, but had a Manley Vox Box in the past.

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone. Glad to hear some of you are in my neck of the woods as well (I live in Allen for those in the area). Hopefully we can work together on something at some point.
As far as the mic upgrade goes, I’m just hoping to find something that adds a little special “magic” - not even totally sure what I’m missing, but I’m hoping to know it when I hear it (😂). In addition to the U87, I’m considering several of the 87/67 clones - especially the Beesneez BU67/87 and United Studio Technologies Twin87. My Sweetwater guy hooked me up with a Neumann and a RND Portico today. I decided that I really just needed to try those out in my studio and see what hear. I’ve had my eye on both for a while, and I don’t think I’ll be happy until I give ‘em a shot. I have a UA 4-710D as well and I plan to try the mic through that tube pre as well, although it’s not exactly know for being a standout. I plan to see if I can drive it hard enough to get some tube color out of it. If the mic isn’t a standout, I’ll send it back and try some other things.
Anyway - thanks, everyone!

Allen isn’t far at all from me. About 30 minutes just like everything is here.
