So I scored one of Stam's 500 series MKII bus comps for pretty cheap. I do intend to make use of it in the coming months with some analog summing - been ITB since 2010 or so when my console finally died, but I'm curious what other uses (if any) people put these things into action on? I have my Audioscape Opto and 76A in use often when tracking. I have one of Stam's LA3/4 on the way (supposedly this week) and I have a good idea of where to use that.
but i don't know that i've heard of anyone using these on anything but their 2 bus. it's fine if it's just not a tracking comp. just curious if there are some secrets to these things.

Drum bus of course and smashing down vocal groups on auto to make them sit. Auto, 1ms attack. CRUSH THEM ALL.

I've used various SSL style's... Alan Smart etc on just about everything?
Tracking? Drum room, overheads, guitar amps (stereo), group backing vocals that are stereo miked... B3 & Leslie cab... pianos... acoustic guitars in stereo...
Mix? Funny enough the 2 mix is the one place where I'm not a huge fan. Sometimes if I need that sound. Usually winds up on drum group (ok) or vocal group. Some sort of SSL style also winds up on "tracks" which is all the leftover stuff that doesn't fall into one of the big groups like drums, guitars, etc.

In addition to 2-bus or drum bus, I kind of like them on a pretty wide variety of "groups" or busses: electric guitar bus, vocal bus, acoustic guitar bus. I personally find the SSL-style bus comp to be quite versatile. Sometimes I really like it on bass after my Stam SA-2A. It can even be really good on lead vocals - different flavor than LA2A or 1176 or Vari-Mu.

I had 3 different ones for awhile, liked the audioscape on 2 bus, stam on drums, warm wherever.

The SSL style Buss Comp works great on all kinds of busses, but the one thing that it just dosen't ever work on is a mono channel comp. Every time I have ever tried to use it as such its always been a disappointment.

I really prefer the G comp for Drum Bus into an API 2500 on Master bus than either of those two compressors alone. There's kind of a secret sauce there. There's a GREAT video on Youtube which demonstrates how they can really work well together here: SSL on Drum Bus, API on Master Bus <- LINK HERE.
