You can run spdif and the ADAT at the same time on the apollo x6. I have an 8 channel digimax connected to the adat and the dbx is going through the spdif. I don't care about the dbx pre. They have a sound to them, not terrible but not great. That is why I am adding the Pacifica to replace the DBX pre. I can run the Pacifica through the line in of the DBX and it will bypass the pre on the dbx but still pass through the tube. It's an option just don't know how it will change the flavor of the Pacifica. This is why I am looking at options to convert the Pacifica to digital to connect directly through the spdif. i say give the DBX-as-A/D-and-line-amp a shot with the Pacifica first to see what you think. Maybe you’ll love it, and no need for anything else. You never know… That's exactly what I plan to do. Try it through the DBX and try it through the regular line inputs of the apollo and see if the DBX adds or takes away from it. I should have the Pacifica sometime tomorrow. I will report back how it turned out. In the meantime I am still keeping my eyes open for a good deal on an ADC.

I agree with Mark. Might as well do a small test with analog input and then through the DBX to see what changes. That would be pretty cool if it all worked. I agree, that's what I plan to do. I am really looking foward to the Pacifica. I heard a lot of great things about it. All my pres have been that neveish flavor. Looking to see what a different flavor adds. They say the Pacifica is clean but with a bit of mojo to it. Somewhere between a Neve and API.

I had one of those DBX 386 units for a long time and would have probably kept it save for the fact it would have thrown my current setup off with 2 extra channels that would have nowhere to go (and no s/pdif to hop in on). Honestly, not a bad unit. Yes, a bit colorful - but it was nice to have around for an extra pair of inputs or instrument/keys DI on the fly. I've certainly heard much, much worse. As a line amp and A/D - I guess I'd bin it as YMMV. There's no bypassing the tube stage IIRC, so sending a clean pre into the 386 just for the converters might be the wrong thing here.

I'm still pleased I bought an Audient Mico mic preamp when they were still available - two super-clean preamp channels, one with front panel high(-ish) impedance DI and HMX flavour option, and the other with variphase, plus a built-in A/D converter with S/PDIF, Toslink and AES/EBU digital outputs. A nice package!

Yeah it’s not bad. Certainly colorful. I tried running my isa pre through it and it didn’t sound bad. I did an an A/B and it wasn’t much of a difference. I plan to do some more testing using the pacifica.

Are you using all the inputs simultaneously? Or do you just need a patchbay?

Are you using all the inputs simultaneously? Or do you just need a patchbay? I have a patch bay. Yes this is so I can use all inputs simultaneously. My DBX 386 is doing a good job as an ADC.
