I spent a king’s ransom on the Blue Bottle mic and 4 additional caps well north of 5K! I hated it - what a huge disappointment that purchase was! I bought a used Blue Dragonfly. Hated it. I will give it this, very few mics are so unique in sounding horrible on virtually everything. LMAO!!! Oh my God, that was quality. Absolutely priceless.

If I had any spare money (which these days with two kids at university isn't looking likely for the next 5 years :-) I would love to get a Neumann U67 RI. Do you have one special particular mic on your current "wish list"? On the spare money front - I hate to break it to ya, but the "university" part is just the beginning.... . At least in my experience..... Oh well..... On the special particular mic wish list - it's the Heiserman H251 without a doubt. Should be out shortly. That and a second Heiserman H47T and I'll be happy. OK....who am I kidding. There will be more mics on the horizon. But those are on the short term docket. And the race is on . . . .

"Q1. What gear did you buy that you thought was going to be the tits but turned out being flat?"
Okay, I thought of one. The DBX 160SL. Here I was thinking that I was getting something somewhere between that 'classic' 160 sound and a G-Comp. It turned out to be neither. I couldn't seem to find anything where it worked. Certainly not on stereo bus duties (which was what I was hoping for), definitely not on drums, bass, vocals... you either had this crazy over-pumping (where other comps would call it 'character') or just a hazy, dulling of the source with no discernible benefit.
But hey, it was purple.
I was thinking of hotrodding the internals a bit, but it just didn't even seem good enough to try. Bought it for $700 towards the bottom of the outboard market and sold it for $1100 closer to the average. Did I fall back on my advertising background to write an enticing Reverb posting about "classic VCA sound that made DBX famous"? Sure. But I also said "plus, it's purple. And analog." Which these days is properly what attracted the buyer.

I had an original Dragon fly for about a week, it wasn’t bad, bought a second for a pair for a second, it was the later ones plugged it in and listed both a second later.

Oddly enough, I kept the 566 around for much longer before and after. Different beast and much more willing to roll around in the mud. I've found better units to do grimy / gritty since, but there are occasional moments I miss it.

I've found better units to do grimy / gritty since, but there are occasional moments I miss it. It was a very strange period for DBX, no one knew what DBX wanted to be, the silver, Purple and Blue series were all build as being “above “ the 160, the thing was everybody was still buying 160’s. After trying to turn DBX into the VCA based Focusrite, it became the New DOD, LA audio and BSS all companies Harmon crippled making DBX what it wasn’t. Thing was DBX had a cool graphic EQ they didn’t know what to do with but rental houses loved. The 1531, RANE actually built them for DBX and I heard they lost money on them but it was a single space Graphic that was switchable from a 2ch 15 band to single ch 31 band, you can see why rental houses loved them. Instead of farming it out to China they built a bunch of boring Graphics in China.

Some bits of gear “hypnotise” you for years into thinking they’re great, the one, perfect for the job.
It took me 12 years to realise I really truly didn’t like my Klein and Hummel 0300’s …. 12 years I tell you!

I have a friend who wanted to track her album at a studio whose Flagship Mic was a Blue Bottle. It also featured an untreated control room. I begged her to find somewhere else.
