I’m picking up CLA Epic and Ovox Vocal Synthesizer, and looking for a third plugin since I get one free with their Black Friday deal…I don’t need another compressor, or eq, or much of anything else for that matter…but anything special from Waves that I’m missing? Any standouts (even if they’re comps/eq’s etc)?
Are any of the VI’s any good?

FWIW‚ in addition to CLA Epic, I still like:
Sibilance H-Delay Vocal Doubler

I still use MV2 and H-Delay. I have a ton of their plugins but don't use them too often. Some get really nasty if you hit them with anything close to digital 0. I mean really nasty. Stay at -18 and they act much better.

MV2 works for me for quick podcast work. Annoying as I find CLA, Epic is easy to get something useful with I honestly use the 550B and L2 on every mix (very specific duties where the grit actually helps me!)

RVox and the more tweakable RCompressor are classics.
Abbey Road Plates and Chambers are nice if you're not already covered there.
CLA Drums gets a lot of use here for "modern" bright mixes and/or quick tasks.
Vocal Rider is really great sometimes if you're going for invisible compression.
CLA Epic is my go-to for big, reverbed drum sounds.

I am by no means a plugin expert, but I really like the lat/vertical matrix on the PuigChild. I imagine there are better 670 emulators out there, but for $30 this one yanks my crank every time.

CLAEffects is extremely underrated and not that easy to replace. I use it for distorted vocals and throw delays. There’s plenty of decent Waves stuff. I’m scratching my head at what others I still use. I’m not interested in paying WUP, so I just stick with what I have. Even installing the cracked versions seems like a pain, so I don’t bother with that. L1 gets occasional use here and there, the newest version.
To me, it always looks like the big Waves proponents are these guys who have been using them since the turn of the century and never had any interest in modernizing.

HUGE fan of Abbey Road Vinyl. Do yourself a favor and demo it. Godly on the stereo buss.

so many brand choices. I have quite a few waves and never really use them. I will try Epic again. I grab L1 on occasion. I could live without. Plugin alliance ticks most of the boxes but then something utilitarian will be needed for an issue and waves fits the bill. I give up.

If you don't have an SSL strip, I've heard really good things about the SSL E V2 strip.
CLA Vocals is another nice, one stop shop for mixing vocals with different shelves, compression, delay and verb (the verb is the only part that doesn't work well for me) and a nice stereo chorus/widener.

This is probably going to sound like an odd move in 2022, but I finally grabbed Q Clone after having access to it years ago. It’s the only plug I know of that can “grab” the EQ curves of some black box plugins, or processors that have great curves/presets but are CPU hogs, have modeled noise that can’t be turned off, aliasing, etc. Ozone Match can do it but it requires more work and is level and source dependent, and with Plugin Doctor you can match it by hand but it’s a painstaking process, I’d rather just take 10 seconds to get the snapshot and move on.
I also picked up CR8 Sampler because the loop stretching and chopping engines are similar to the aging and much higher priced XFer Nerve.

Thanks guys, after some researched I grabbed the C4 multiband comp. I figured I don’t have one so why not?

I like CLA Bass as a start for bass guitar and CLA mix, just kissing it on the 2-bus.

I’ll use Kramer PIE and Tape on occasion, RVox, RBass, Aphex, MV2, S1…but that’s about it.

Renaissance Maxx collection …. no brainer
Vocal Rider is great imho. CLA 76’s have a unique sound. Abbey Road Plate and Chamber I use a fair bit.
I like their 88 electric piano and a few other odds and ends.
Waves definitely have their place in the market.

Another one I've been coming back to lately is NLS.
I used to HATE that thing, but now I strangely find myself liking it?
For whatever reason, I was convinced it sounded dull and mushy. Don't know what I was hearing, tbh.
I actually think it sounds great now, especially the Neve and EMI models. Even stranger is I've been enjoying stacking it. I actually have 3 instances of the EMI on a stereo buss right now, and goodness, it sounds great. Low end is HUGE and it just slightly fuzzes out the top end in a way that's really satisfying.

I second that. Sure there's that reverb that works sometimes and can sound very pretty. L2 might do it's thing on vocals. I also was hyped with Clarity but never used it. It looked pretty and I'm a pro designer. But no, never use Waves.

Waves is just.... yeah, those Waves broke and rolled back into the ocean. Too much hassle with constant incremental updates and surprise upgrade fees for this guy right here.
The only things that I would occasionally reach for were Berzerk and the doubler/quadrupler. But Steinberg's now made really good alternatives as part of the Cubase plug-in set.

No one’s talking about Waves BB Tubes? I’m hearing good things. Watched the vid with Joe C and Greg W. 24 bucks so I bought it. I like it so far. Even has an oversampling option. Cool enough for me.
