This is not a converter debate. I don't give a shit about conversion really. I noticed a hair of difference going from Presonus to my current Alphalink and don't expect to hear much if I decide to move to the Orion.
I want the Orion because it's 32 channels over USB, I don't NEED 32 but I'll take them. I have only 16 preamps and I've never used all of them, I'd bet some channels have yet to be used.
What I need are headphone mixes. Under my current situation I would need to purchase a new computer with a PCI or PCIE slot and an RME card with 24 adat, wordclock and midi i/o. Guessing numbers, this whole purchase would run me $1500 at least.
OR
I can trade in the Alphalink, L/M said somewhere in the neighborhood of 1500-1800 bucks trade in value for the SSL and I'd put it towards an Orion. Which does come with it's own sort of Totalmix deal.
Either way I'm spending $1500 ish on this purchase. I like that the Orion takes up a single RU (I'm in a basement with not much space), it's over USB (I could trade in my Presonus Firestudio Lightpipe) which makes it easy to integrate into different computer arrangements down the line, it's 32 channels and it's shiny. Shiny is usually better.
What do you guys think?

I've been following the orion debut closely, i'm interested in finding out more from users as well, it seems too good to be true, which is part of the reason i'm still not completely sold on it yet, along with the well documented driver bugs? i would rather spend 5-6K and be surely happy, than toss 3k down the drain, if you can dig what i mean? i'm trying to be patient, and let the driver bugs get worked out before i give her a test drive.

Which version of Alphalink do you have? I have the Alphalink AX, the original ADAT version. I run it off of a Mixpander 5 card. I run the ADAT out to a behringer ADA8000 just for headphone mixes so I don't use any of the 24 channels. I run 4 stereo stems of guitars, drums, bass, vocals and use the SSLmixer program to make these stems.
I don't know what you are asking for specifically, but hope this helps.

Hey Svart,
I have the original AX as well..
My problem is I ran out in a panic after a motherboard fried and bought a machine that has no slots for a card. so I'd have to purchase a new computer as well as a Mixpander which would be about the same as what I'd spend on the orion.
