I've been really into a Tape Op Group buy over the shell of BD for a while, as I kind of does what I always want from a resonant head mic.
Then my buddy Jerry showed up with his FET47... I used it on guitar for the first song a band we both play in was cutting. Partially because I had the drum sound already dialed in. Though, for the second, later session I put in on the BD head and, no surprise, it sounds freaking great.
I've done a few things since and I'm still digging it.
Obviously I won't be getting a $3500 FET47 anytime soon. I used to use an AT 4047 there a lot, so I'm considering rebuying one. But I'd love to hear what people are into.

I was super impressed with my recently acquired Beyerdynamic M380 on a session this week in that spot. The sE X1D also works well for me there. I'll also on occasion put my AEA R44CE in that spot. I think anything with a proximity effect you can use to your advantage works well.

I’ve been rocking a good ol’ Oktava MK-319. Sounds pretty cool.

I mostly use custom Barbaric mics there. I’ve been tempted on occasion to grab one of the consensually-good 47FET clone-mics, for such a job, to see how it compares to my usual customs. I’ve also considered trying that dual headphone driver mic there… Can’t think of the name of it off the top of my head.
I have the Yamaha Sub Kick and the studio has one too, but honestly, I’ve been disappointed the last number of times I’ve used it. Great for metal, to go with the Beta 91A inside, but I’ve not done metal for a number of years now.

My studio partner bought the Roswell Mini k47BD (designed to take bass drum SPL) and loves it.
I still really love a Royer 121 here.

I’ve recently been digging an EV868 there. I’ve always used condensers outside, but the slower/duller thud is making me happy right now.
3U Warbler MKIIID was there before and always worked nicely.

When a Fet47 is not available, I've actually had fantastic results with a lowly Beta 52. I've also had success using an R92 (with pop filter).

My studio partner bought the Roswell Mini k47BD (designed to take bass drum SPL) and loves it. I didn't know they added that mic to the line. Gooogling....

For the OP, Lawson 47FET is killer here and can often be found used for $1k. U195 is also great for this!

414 b/uls in fig 8
Earthworks omni
47 fet kinda sucks... and it's boring... and since that's what everyone seems to do these days? Even more sucky and boring. Dunno. Was never a fan of that.

Pretty much all my favs have already been mentioned
love an EV n/d868 on kick! also really like the X1D (been using it on the batter side.. 'knee' position, but it seems to work well on either end.. thanks to you for that suggestion Tony) m88 and d12 also give me things I like down there.. but I'd pick the above first if I had to choose
Someone also mentioned an r44ce. I love that batter side .. too afraid to place that out front. Makes me nervous enough down there as it is... but the bottom end is glorious
Rented a 47fet .. had to know, but it just didn't do it for me
.. the problem could be me

Honestly, my favorite 47FET placement is floor tom.
And yes, I agree… I can’t believe I didn’t grab the X1D when available and for so cheap. Stupid.

I can get away with certain genres with a fathead On the outside kick and a fathead as an overhead. And even when that doesn’t work the fathead stays on the kick (outside with a pop filter). Great mics.

Rub it in… Just rub it in. Thanks. Ha!
I was reading TapeOp tonight and saw the DPA 4055 ad. It’s my first awareness of it. Not sure how I feel about it. Sorta makes me want to try one. On the other hand, makes me want to just grab a good and well-balanced, extended, and cheap electret that me and many people already have and regularly use elsewhere and shove it in or near the kick. Line Audio anyone?

I discovered I like SPC1 there, I guess that’s my thing, now I bring it to any drum setup. I do low pass it around 150 hz. So it’s not like the traditional FOK, it’s all sub. I bet any transformerless mic would give a similar vibe, 414, X1D, AT4040 etc. I also love a beater side mic, whatever I’d use on snare or toms but I don’t get to try it often. So instead of leaning outer kick for warmth I’d rather go for wurst mic or beater head, use outer kick as a 20-100hz channel. Lots of great ideas.. I gave away my fathead pair years ago, I do miss them

Audio Technica 4040 for me. It's always good there (and on driven/distorted electric guitars but that's a different conversation).
I normally position it as close as I can to the kick reso without the shockmount touching the head as it excurses. It leaves me with a good shove of low end, a bit of bang and grunt in the mids, and not much else...especially after I EQ it. Sometimes I set up more in the middle of the head and other times more halfway between center and hoop. It's a feel thing it seems. Some mics are placed with precision and tweaked for extra specific capture while that front kick always seems to feel like jazz. I listen to the drum, put the mic where I think I want it, and it always seems to be right.

Heiserman H47 on K out. Inside I use one of several dynamics - usually RE20 these days, also ND868 or when reliable a D12/D20. Not sure if any of my 4 D12s is 100%, but the one that sounds the best is the one with the broken frame...

I haven’t had the opportunity to try it personally, but based on various clips I’ve heard, I have a feeling a Soyuz 023 would be killer for this.
